hector Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Hi!I would really appreciate it if anyone could offer an explanation or a way of discovering why my computer's hard disk goes mad for about three minutes post-boot up on an nLited XP disc?In Windows Task Manager the 'System Idle Process' is at 98% CPU usage or thereabouts and remains there during and after the blitz.I could post my INI boot config file? Thanks!
dexter.inside Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 possible causes can be: 1) massive registry, event log and system files fragmentation 2) antivirus that does a complete check of all files accessed pending boot 3) some service that hangs or is being delay-started
hector Posted April 20, 2007 Author Posted April 20, 2007 hmmm...there's no virus scan running, because that was disabled. Registry shouldn't be fragmented (it's just been installed!).I'm posting my nlite config file. Any help would be welcomed! Can also post Windows task manager if that would help?[Main]Env = 1.3 - 2.0.50727.42.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2Target = Windows XP Professional SP:2 - DonDamm Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 First thing - turn off indexing on that disk. Right click on the disk icon in Explorer and choose Properties. then uncheck the box at the bottom where it says, "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file seaching". That may not be the onoly thing, but it is one of them. Second, if you are using Sysmantec AV Corp, the newer versions of that have an automatic scan on start up. If you have that, you can delete it. It's a good idea in a business, but a pain at home. [edit: I see you have AVG.]Third, update to Adobe Reader 8 and you might consider the lite edition.Fourth, put your pagefile on another partition, or even another disk.I don't see anything right off the bat which might cause that kind of thrashing and I don't think it has to do directly with nLite itself. I see you've got AVG, so I'd check for a start up scan of some kind. Also, check what services are starting up with your Startup Monitor. You may find the culprit there.
newsposter Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 sysinternals.com page defragAnd yes, a 'freshly installed' system will have reg fragmentation. Lots of it.
rehbar Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Reinstall Os and use WinXP manager and customize your xp and defragment your registry by using it's tweeks.
newsposter Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 defragment your registry by using it's tweeks.???

It's much appreciated. The problem here is that I have used this nLited disc on two powerful computers (one a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo machine) and both exhibit the same thrashing around for the first five minutes after logging in, and then settle down and are really zippy! The disc is not fragmented so I am thinking it is an error with one of the addon packs I've added. I do need to replace the version of Reader I am using with 8 - but other than that I am at a loss as to know what to do. I would also like to replace the version of iTunes I used because when Apple tried to update it (reported to have worked) it now won't open at all.Any further ideas? I can't turn off drive indexing because I don't have the option or text at all to do so.
strotee76 Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Looking at your Hotfixes section, I see a lot of possibilities (almost 20). Much like programming, one has to take baby steps to see where something breaks. I'm willing to bet one of those hotfixes is the culprit. Start there.
