loefat Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 (edited) I bought a new motherboard and processor. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 4600 with ASUS M2N4-SLI motherboard. I tried installing XP pro and it goes through the installation process then when it comes time to reboot it will go to the opening screen where you can press DEL for setup then to press any button to boot from cd... then it goes directly to the "Start in safe mode "" start windows normallly black screen" Anything selection I hit the computer reboots and starts all over again. NOTE: I have two harddrives with all my programs still on them. Should I bite the bullet and format them or can I still install windows without losing my data? Also I have the phoenix award bios cmos setup utility is there something I could check out in that that maybe fix my problem?Topics merged -- Please, do not create topics with same problem.--Sonic Edited March 27, 2007 by Sonic
nmX.Memnoch Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 It's probably trying to tell you that it can't find a boot drive. When it starts to boot press F8 so that you get the options (Safe Mode, VGA, etc). Choose the "Disable restart on error" option. It should now show you a BSOD instead of just rebooting. See what the BSOD says. But yes, when doing a motherboard replacement it's generally recommended to reinstall.
loefat Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 when I press F8 it brings up the boot menu where it asks me to choose a boot first ( floppy harddrive or cdrom) it didn't say anything about VGA or safemode
loefat Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 (edited) can it be drivers? after selecting one of the options of *start windows safe mode or normally* it goes quickly to a blue screen with some text that I can't tell what it says and reboots. there is a new video card in there too ASUS EN7600GS Silent. nitroshift Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 After the POST press F8 and when displayed the menu, choose "Don't restart ...." (can't remember the syntax). You will be presented with a blue screen with an error code after restart. Please come back on this thread with the error code. Unless you tell us that code, we won't be able to help you.
loefat Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 (edited) when I press F8 it brings up the boot menu just asks me what I want to boot first, there is no dont restart option Edited March 27, 2007 by loefat
nitroshift Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 (edited) when I press F8 it brings up the boot menu just asks me what I want to boot first, there is no dont restart optionDo NOT press F8 during POST! POST is when you start the pc up and it presents you the black screen with the pc specs (white writing).EDIT:In the future please don't create another thread for EXACTLY the same problem you are facing. Continue what you started! Edited March 27, 2007 by nitroshift

nmX.Memnoch Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Gaaaahh...looks like some motherboard manufacturers are using F8 for the boot device selection menu. Wait until your system has passed the BIOS before starting to press F8. The timing will be tricky but you should be able to catch it between BIOS load and Windows boot.
nmX.Memnoch Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Double post...http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95312I figured that's what it was. If you read his other post he says he didn't reinstall Windows.
