If you look around the DirectX section of Microsoft Downloads, you can find what appears to be DirectX 8.1b (note the 'b' at the end). The date for it appears to be newer than the 8.1 installed with XP. Should this be installed or skipped?

if you are using Windows XP why bother with DirectX8 when you can have DirectX9b?

usually the newest stuff supports the older ones

there are exceptions I believe but nvidia drivers I think they support.

Also dx9 has dx8 files in it...

I'm sure you had DX8 installed when you had a GFX card that was released before DX8.

On the contrary, I don't like DX9 very much... causes problems when I play some games.

Now this worries me :) - do you happen to know which games in particular, or do errors come in randomly for all games?

8.1b is a newer version and contains acouple security plugs and improvements to the original 8.1 with WinXP.

i would install it, but my graphics board requires 9.0
