dtamonis Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 Heh, today I decided to get myself a Lightscribe-capable DVD burner. However, I found out that to use the Lightscribe feature, I need to run Lightscribe system software, and it requires at least Win2000.Question: is it in any way possible to make it work in Win98SE? And if not, what's so special about it that Win98 isn't supported?
glocK_94 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I'm sure there's nothing specific, they just decided not to care about older systems. Soon, you'll probably get vista-only software that won't even run on 2k/xp...Try with KUP. You never know.
Drugwash Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Have you tried Nero 7.0? I think it might work.
dtamonis Posted February 23, 2007 Author Posted February 23, 2007 Haven't tried 7.0, but it won't work unless I succesfully install the aforementioned Lightscribe system software. It's like a video codec, you install it and then watch movies with any player. Actually, the CD that came with the burner had Nero 6.6 which, of course, is fully compatible with win98, but the included Nero Lightscribe doesn't install, it says my OS is not supported. I downloaded the trial version of Acoustica CD/DVD label maker, which is also compatible with win98, however, I didn't see any Lightscribe options. Upon looking at the FAQ, I saw that this system software must be installed first. And I can't do that. All I could do was to install it on an XP machine, then copy the files to mine. But I get missing exports in shell32.dll and ntdll.dll. I'll try KUP when I get back home, but I don't keep high hopes.But... there are quite a few regulars using win98 here, hasn't anyone really bought a Lightsribe drive? I expected to find at least a few previous topics about this. Well, if all else fails, I'll probably get a USB to IDE adapter and connect it to laptop with XP as an external drive.
dtamonis Posted February 25, 2007 Author Posted February 25, 2007 OK, I tried KUP 0.27, no difference. Here's what I also tried: upon running LsSrvc.exe (which, as I understand, is the 'service' that enables the usage of Lightscribe), first I got a missing export in ntdll.dll. So I downloaded this file and replaced it in MS-DOS mode. This lead to many errors when Windows loaded up and inability of them to shutdown, but computer was still usable. However, when I tried to run this LsSrvc.exe again, this time it complained about a missing export in advapi32.dll. I replaced it the same way but, unfortunately, Windows didn't boot at all after that - the screen just went blank and that was it.Question to win98 gurus: is there something that can be done? Or I really shouldn't bother and should just get that USB to IDE adapter and connect this DVD writer as an external device to my laptop with XP? But I really would like to somehow run it on my desktop machine.
Drugwash Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Q: What Operating Systems are supported by LightScribe?A: LightScribe is available on Windows (Vista, XP, 2000), and supports Mac OS X 10.3.9 via the Lacie DVD+/-RW external Double layer drives and DVD +/- internal drives. Linux x86 with kernel 2.6 and RPM is supported through the LaCie Linux Labeler.Lightscribe support page has no truck with Win9x.
RainyShadow Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 LightScribe not compatible with Win9x ?! So there's one more reason for me to stick with LabelFlash. It can burn labels on the data side of DVD media, for the label side you'll need a specific Fuji media though. And the only software needed for it is a newer version of Nero.
