Install failing - system just powers off

Hello.

I'm received my new Vista Ultimate SW and am trying to do a clean install on my new home build machine.

it's got 2Gg RAM, DUo Core processor and 400Gg HD, PCIe Sapphire 1650Pro graphics card....however....

- During the install when the DVD copies it's files, the system randomly powers off without notice.

This has happened at 59%, 62%, 74%, 84%

- then when all sw has been copied onto HD, and the installer moves on to try and install features and packages, the system then switches off again.

The RAM, the processor and the motherboard are all brand new and reputable brands. The power supply (400W and also new) has been swapped with

my old one 300W, but the same thing keeps happening.

I've unplugged all unneccessary PCI cards etc (to take it down to a barebone system). The BIOS safe defaults have also been chosen.

It seems to me its a power supply problem, but thenagain I've tried 2 different ones and am getting the same results.

Before you ask, I've tried using different SATA drives as the install target too...

anyone have any ideas on whats going on? at the moment i can't get my new software installed on the **** machine.

is it the power supply not feeding enough power through to the mainboard ? is the pcie card zapping too much power ?!?

try another copy of Windows.

Is the copy of Windows genunie or not ?

Theres only one thing i can recommend, make sure your system is not overheating or anything.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop and it used to switch/power off randomly during applications/processes that required alot of power. A quick 3 day checkup at the dealer made everything run at top notch once again.

But then again its a laptop so i dont know about desktops.

thanks for your thoughts, but at the moment the system case is open (as in the lid is off= lots of ventilation) without much gubbins running inside it apart from the pcie graphics card, 1 SATA hard disk, the cpu, the memory and the dvd drive.

I must be on my 20th install attempt today...

It's because of your 1 sata drive.

For some reason Vista wont install on a sata, I tried too.

You need a IDE drive

thanks for your help all, but I think I've cracked it.

Vista DOES install onto single (or more) instance(s) of SATA drives without any IDE device (unless the IDE DVD-Writer connected on the SATA bridge counts as a device).

the problem I was experiencing was due to 'heat' methinks (thanks Issy1993!!! - you got me thinking about it).

after having tried approx 30 installs throughout the day yesterday (with different PSUs) I noticed the heat sink on the CPU wasn't seated properly.

I prressed 2 of the calipers down again properly until they snapped into place. The following install worked perfectly the first time (per say).
