luke.mccormick Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 (edited) I've been getting complaints at work(mainly on newer updated xp sp2 images) mainly on HP DC5100 business desktops. updates are current within a month, and I'm thinking it was a hotfix that's causing this but can't tell which one it might be. Basically no every time I install a driver for a device, especially USB Thumb drives, the users are told to install 3 drivers(usb mass storage, generic volume, and disk drive) but they're afraid to, plus we don't want them to have to and they don't want to go thru the hassle of going thru the add/remove hardware wizard, each user and sometimes seems to be certain usb drives and each user, they want to plug in the USB stick, wait 3 seconds and use it. Does anyone know what may be causing this problem? or a way we can fix it without reinstalling windows and creating yet another image? Edited January 10, 2007 by luke.mccormick

luke.mccormick Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 ok, thanks, please anyone else can add anything for me to try as i am unfortunately an impatient person and don't want to wait for extra posts, i am now at home and will try sonic's tip tomorrow, thanks.
luke.mccormick Posted January 11, 2007 Author Posted January 11, 2007 did not fix issue, i also copied an infcache.1 from a computer that already had the drivers installed and copied it to one that didnt have them installed yet, no difference.
Ponch Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I think if you use an oher pair of USB connectors, it is normal that it is considered as new device and be reinstalled (usb mass storage, generic volume, and disk drive). But only once. So if you have a PC with 6 USB ports, you might have to install 3 times.
luke.mccormick Posted January 11, 2007 Author Posted January 11, 2007 only the front 2 are ever being used.thanks though
