I bet they are missing from the default profile: C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch. I don't know why they are never initialized. I delete everything from there, and then copy the ones I like, so I cannot say if mine were initialized, unless the initialization takes place when you selcet to show the toolbar.

If you are copying over the NTUSER.DAT, it would be a good time to do any housekeeping in the default profile. (C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\)

If you come up with an easy way to copy the profile and NTUSER.DAT, do tell.

As far as explicit instructions, I cannot help you there until I understand what you final objective is (what's wrong with the MS default profile?...)

My programming skills are minimal, but I'm pretty good at connecting the dots (like implementing AaronXP's excellent hotfix solution and WebMedic/Devil's app install). As for the MS default profile, it's good, but one size never fits all

I would think you can copy it over from GuiRunOnce, the only inconvenience being that the settings will be applied to new users, but not the Administrator, as that account has already been initialized.

I'll give this a go during the next week or so. From what I have read in this forum, I should probably jettison the default Administrator account following setup via rename/ultra-password, and let the first user who signs in take administrative responsibility and run the show.

I'll also work with un4given1's suggestion and your own preference--like mine, me thinks--for the pure registry hack route. One of these two methods surely will do the trick.

You will find that this method works just as well, and keeps with the consistency of all of your other reg hacks.

BTW: the reason for the two values in the same key is because one works with SP1 and the other one works with preSP1.  It does not hurt to have both.  The second value is all that is needed for SP1 and above.  They changed the key in SP1.

No, the reg tweak does not do that. The shortcuts are initialized by the corresponding programs (IE, WMP, Outlook, etc.)

I'm just not having any luck with any method. Does anyone have a direct link to a reg or cmd file? I've tried both methods, neither seems to work, I think because of spacing problems. Importing to the registry tells me it's an invalid file, and I get bad command or syntax error trying to use the long binary string.

You should really set the taskbar (as well as your other explorer preferences) and export the file yourself. In any event ... here is mine:

The ntuser.dat file does contain unique CLSID's and hardcoded usernames and paths.

For that reason alone you should avoid copying ntuser.dat files; importing settings through registry files in cmdlines.txt is the preferred and way more elegant solution.

Because most items will just work. But you will get minor issues, for example:

Instead of writing to:

c:\documents and settings\MyCurrentAccount\local settings\temp

it will write to:

c:\documents and settings\user_that_was_ntuser.dat_copied_from\local settings\temp.

And so on...

Just open up a ntuser.dat file in notepad and see for yourself how many hardcoded paths, CLSID's and usernames there are present in an actual ntuser.dat file. They'll keep pointing to the original locations that where defined in the copied ntuser.dat file instead of pointing to the new user locations.

It will work, but it's certainly not the nicest way to do it.

You can try and see if that works but you can also use "reg load" to load the ntuser.dat file and then inject the correct settings.
