Kagato
Is it ok to use update.exe from the common directory?I could only assume so, if it's the same version, etc. - here's a timestamp/filesize of the files I have under the SP2\Update folder :02/27/2002 05:58 PM 4,092 eula.txt09/02/2003 11:59 PM 19,131 KB826939.cat09/17/2003 01:19 PM 22,016 spcustom.dll09/17/2003 01:17 PM 568,320 update.exe09/02/2003 11:50 PM 47,065 update.inf09/02/2003 11:23 PM 2,652 update.ver
BAMacek
Perfect.I checked it out and my "update.exe" in "common", and it's attributes matched up perfectly with your "update.exe" in "sp2".I should have thought of doing that a long time ago. Thanks.

baliktad
There were really only ever 2 versions of this patch. The original version released 15Oct2003 contains version 5.3.23.4 of update.exe (has problems installing when you don't have the Debug Programs user right) and version 5.1.2600.1301 of msgsvc.dll and wkssvc.dll. This is the version that also does not copy wkssvc.dll to the dllcache. The updated release occurred on 29Oct2003. This one includes version 5.4.1.0 of update.exe and 5.1.2600.1309 of msgsvc.dll and wkssvc.dll. It correctly copies both files to the dllcache on installation.Note that both the 1301 and 1309 versions of msgsvc.dll/wkssvc.dll will protect you against the vulnerability detailed in MS03-043.The only users who will need to redownload are those who obtained the patch before 29 Oct 2003. If you are unsure which version you have, extract the contents and look at some of the version numbers or compare the MD5 sums below.2e4320d4b52e634c2b3e736728d4b3af *WindowsXP-KB828035-x86-ENU.exe (15Oct2003 release)e9086cefe118e82637996fcebb519e5b *WindowsXP-KB828035-x86-ENU.exe (29Oct2003 release)

Maybe Microsoft have changed it? Or is it just me?Thanks
Aaron
Yes you're right, the filesize has changed to include this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830846
willpantin
Quote AaronXP:Yes you're right, the filesize has changed to include this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830846Well, but if they ADDED 830846, shouldn't it be BIGGER in size, not SMALLER?Should I replace my old version with the new one? I just did an install last Monday, and no critical updates came up when I ran Windows Update, even though I had the old Q824141...
Aaron
Because it only has a fixed update.exe file - nothing is added. If your old version of 824141 installs fine on your PC, and doesn't suffer from any of the symptoms on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830846 then there's no problem. GreenMachine
I realized it's only a recommended, but I've not come accross it. Perhaps because I normally disable CD burning, or perhaps it's new (high number, dead link in WU)
Aaron
I've no idea what HighMAT does, but have heard of it. Personally I don't use the inbuilt cd-burning feature as its somewhat limited
