IE script error on 98se w/ SP 2.1a on .chm help files

Featured Replies

When clicking in a link inside a .chm help file, I get a yellow !-dialog

title bar: Internet Explorer Script Error
Line: 1
Char: 1
Error: object doesn't supprot this property or method
Code: 0
URL: mk@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\blah blah . htm
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
[yes][no]

when I install software, it usually spots something in the help file area, and announces something to the effect that "that newer help file program already installed" (loosely from memory)

any idea what is going on?

Does this happen to all CHMs or just a few, or only one?

LLXX -- It doesn't happen on all help files -- for example, the latest MySQL 5.0.26 chm help file works fine (as does MySQL once I figured it out--so I have some follow up to do there) but the chm for MultiEdit 9.1 and 2k6 don't. They are using active script or something, I have have everything MS possible turned off.

I'm gave IE 6.026 installed but never use it. Is it possible that the chm is written in a way which requires that active scripting be turned on?

If most CHMs are fine then there is nothing wrong with your system as it is the fault of badly written CHM files.

LLXX is right on. I had encountered some IE script errors with RealPlayer 10.5 CHM Help file a year ago. RealNetworks released an updated version of the RealPlayer 10.5 CHM Help file to fix the script errors problem. therefore, the CHM file was poorly written but RealNetworks fixed it.

there was a recent post by BenoitRen in the Undelete Plus thread that he hates CHM files

Death to the CHM format! It's quite lame to have a help format that relies on IE, which in most cases has nothing to do with the application.
