Hi Thanks in advance

I have two machines both running xp pro connected to an adsl router. Both access the internet fine and I can see each machine listed in the home networking but when I try to access the laptop from the desktop it ask's for a user name and password although I have never set any passwords. Access from the laptop to the desktop is fine.

Any idea's how clear the password short of doing a clean instal!

to the laptop add a new user, the same as the one you use on the desktop(same password as well)...

You may not have anything on the laptop set to share. Pick a folder and set it to be shared on the network and see if that helps. It has worked for me more that once...

Plenty being shared I'm still getting the same message logged on as a new user with the same ID as the the desktop! Is it possible having created a new user to delete the old one?

Check your security settings of the folders you are sharing. There may be an issue there.

full sharing with all user's to access read and alter.

I am preparing for a reinstal :/ it may prove quicker. LOL

Have you tried just clicking OK to see what happens?
