uk_flipside Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 OK Guys & Girls (and everything inbetween..... )Laptop has a wifi card (pcmcia-watsit slot thingy) turn on laptop get conection to router but no internet no lan no nothing.......this is what i have to do to get it to work....network connections/wifi properties/ uncheck tcp/ip reboot laptop go back to properties and re-check tcp/ip aquires network address....whoosh away we go.....so i brought a new wifi card by a different maker, after re-installing again and again, still same problem, upgraded to xp pro....still there....i've tried ipconfig /flushdns /release /renew all sorts of stuff, updates, ms knowledge base, winsockxpfix, the last resort is of course format start again but you all know what a ball-ache that is, oh and btw no there isn't a restore point I can go back to or a "rescue" disc either ( no don't lecture me, its normally me doing the lecturing...."did we make a back up?" no I fecking didn't thats why I phoned you fool! )anyway, what do you think, any idea's? I can continue the messing about (its quicker if i uncheck tcp/ip before i shutdown, thats if i remember) but its when you are working away, like I am now.......and it looses its connection and I have to uncheck, repair, recheck, test. just to make a post on a forum......Thanks in advanceJace
Takeshi Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 First, before getting to the wireless bit, any problems with wired connection to the router?
Aegis Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Do you get a valid IP (192.168.x.x)? If you can, then try pinging the router.
nfm Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 (edited) Read manual that came with your router, set static ip on your router and on your laptop (aswell as the deafult getaway and other settings, logon to your router, it should be straighforward) so you can stop messing with "network connection" in conrol panel. uk_flipside Posted August 9, 2006 Author Posted August 9, 2006 Hi Guys, thanks for reading my post....questions, questions,Yes it works fine when its hardwired to the router, the router is fine I run a kick a** PC with two laptops (inc this one) the issue is definatly local, i.e this laptop as when I go a roaming, I'm out on the road, I use wifi spots to pick up emails and check forums....I have the same issue at every access point regardless of supplier I think I need to re-set/re-install TCP/IP, yes I get a proper IP Address however I think it could be somthing to do with DNS renewal and renewal if the IP, unfortunatly tcp/ip is such an imbedded part of XP you can't actually get to it. This seemed to be a pretty switched on forum with some good answers from other people on other subjects I was hoping someon else may have experianced this issue and knew the fix before I go for a dreadded format......... Thanks againJace
uid0 Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 you could try net stop tcpipnet start tcpipand then restart all the services that depend on it if that doesn't work, you could also add devcon restart =netyou'll probably have to download devcon first
rendrag Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 well, there's an easy way to tell if you have DNS issues.64.233.167.99put that into you web browser. Google should pop up.there's no "renewal" of DNS, only DHCP. You shouldn't have to flush your DNS cache that often, if ever, if the connection is working. From a command prompt (start > run > cmd)::::: ipconfig /releaseonce you get an IP of 0.0.0.0, type ::::::ipconfig /renewIf you have a good connection (or any connection for that matter), to your router, it should assign an IP.If it does not, try these steps:Log into the router from a machine with a wired connection. Change the wireless SSID to something unique (your name perhaps). Sometimes wireless Access Points can use the same SSIDs, and that can completely mess up a later connection. Make sure no wireless security is enabled (no MAC filtering, no WEP, WDS, etc.)reboot the laptop and try connecting wirelessly again. Make sure you select the SSID you just created. If you get a connection, first try pinging the router (it would be your default gateway), then try surfing the web.If you don't, since you've tried different manufacturers network cards, you can either try an uninstall/reinstall TCP/IP, or format/reinstall of windows.
uk_flipside Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks PPl,I think I'm going to have to do a full format and reinstall of the OS I have tried most of the above (except devcon) if I ipconfig /release then renew it will not renew the ip address even in properties advanced windows tells me that the WMI is corrupt for all connections so I have that horrible sick feeling you get just before you face the facts and re0install, I will try the devcon first thanks again people.Jace " Save the Earth, its the only planet with chocolate on it"
Takeshi Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 (edited) The way I see it is, if hardwiring works, then there's nothing innately wrong with the TCP/IP in Windows. I'm inclined to think it's hardware (not necessarily the card, but MoBo/PC slot etc) related. Edited August 11, 2006 by Takeshi
