Interesting...I was playing with VMware when I started noticing the crackling sound in the background. Since I had an X-Fi, I immediately assumed that I was suffering from the notorious crackling/popping noise bug. I booted to a different OS and amazingly the problem stopped. Investigated a bit and turns out that VMware mutes Line-In, which then results in the noise. Once I unmuted it, the crackling disappeared. Maybe this was the issue all along ;). Hope someone can confirm this.

Maybe "mute" option was reversed... you thought it was muted but it's actually open, and vice-versa.

Opening the line-in on my onboard AC'97 audio also results in a soft crackling and hissing.

This is normal since the open socket is acting as an antenna and recieving nearby electrical interference.

What was it again...a $200 or $250 card? You can get the X-Fi at Newegg for $70-$80 usually.

Unless you need a little more than the VERY basic connections (e.g. the spdif out and mic in are the SAME plug IIRC), in which case it'll cost a lot more (platinum or better)... And still no DD Live, etc. No X-Fi for me! (can't say I'm a big fan of Creative's stuff anymore after buying a SB Live 5.1 Platinum in 2001 - VERY VERY bad experience overall)

Edit: I've bought a X-Mystique card lately (didn't know about the X-Plosion - maybe it wasn't out back then either). It sure seemed to me like a WHOLE lot better card. It had extra features that really mattered to me (like DD Live), instead of overhyped stuff that makes no difference to me (an overstated SNR that's beyond overkill - there is a point of diminishing return; a 24/96 dithering that is kinda laughable thinking I'm listening to lossy music in the first place, and things like that). The X-Mystique had far better connectitivity too. I wouldn't buy a X-Fi even at half price.
