PROBLEMCHYLD Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 I can't install any reg files at all.also when i run regedit.exe i can't make manual changes either
Takeshi Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 The context menu entry is in HKCR\regfile.Your query is only meaningful if you at least say if you've done something to the system, if you're admin or if your system has been compromised. Even if you're not admin you should be able to edit HKCU. Some registry subkeys you can't edit even if you're admin.
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted July 23, 2006 Author Posted July 23, 2006 Thats the whole objective i don't know how to fix it and i haven't tryed because i don't wanna make things worse
Takeshi Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I know you want to fix it but there're so many things that can happen to a PC it's frustrating if you don't tell us more. I'd rather not guess what happened. There're other possible ways to fix it but it all depends on what happened, whether you're admin and if there's malware. There're ways to edit the registry apart from the context menu item "merge". Double-clicking the reg, using inf, vbs, js and third party tools. It'd also be useful if you say what error message you see.
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted July 24, 2006 Author Posted July 24, 2006 this is what i get clicking a reg filethen i press ok to continue with the process---------------------------Registry Editor---------------------------Cannot import C:\Documents: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.---------------------------OK ------------------------------------------------------Registry Editor---------------------------Cannot import and: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.---------------------------OK ------------------------------------------------------Registry Editor---------------------------Cannot import Settings\others\Desktop\Tweaker\Blklist.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.---------------------------OK ---------------------------
Takeshi Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Aiming specifically at the error messages, then do a check disk (chkdsk) and correct any errors first.
Tasslehoff Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 (edited) Might be a longshot but go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config and check to see that none of the files are set to read only, if they are uncheck the read only attribute from the properties box. Also go to tools/folder options/and check show hidden files and folders, then do a search for ntuser.dat and make sure these aren't set to read only either, finally reboot. Also if you've got xp-antispy make sure the deny starting regedit.exe box isn't checked. Edited July 25, 2006 by Tasslehoff
