iok Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Hi, I need some help.OS: Win XP Pro SP 2My HD was full, so I decided to delete some files. Then I deleted all the c:\windows\$....., incluiding $hf_mig$. Result: Auto Update doesnt work any more. I recieve the notifications, but when i click in DOWNLOAD... nothing happens. The shield icon ath the taskbar dissappear and the updates arent installed or even downloaded.I dont know how to repair the auto-update system, maybe downloading it again or something?I dont mind to check all the updates one by one if they are installed or not, but when i DELETED those dirs, i wasnt informed enough. Thanks
iok Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) I know Windows Update Site is an alternative, but i'm trying to fix this problem.thx SonicI reinstalled Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) but didnt solve it. Edited July 11, 2006 by iok
Takeshi Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 I doubt deleting those folders is the cause of your problem. They are for uninstalling the updates and I remove them periodically without affecting WAU. I suspect there's something else going on.Windows update needs a proper working IE to download the patches in the background.
iok Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 mm So where to aim? if you can guide me, im an average user. What can I do to get more and useful info?Thx takeshi
Takeshi Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) Well, did you delete any other files? Is your IE working? Can you browse the internet with it?Also it's worth trying again, after rebooting and make sure any firewall is not blocking it.I'd also try manual update and see if it works as it'll narrow down the problem somewhat. iok Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 (edited) No, I didnt delete other files. And IE (v ie 6.0.2900.2180) is working OKI rebooted several times, firewall deactivated. Manual Updated (from windows catalog) works fine.Installed KB914388,916595,917159,917537 manually and everything fine.Services are Initiated, so I cant figure out what could be.I hit the download button and the updater just dissappears. Thunderbolt 2864 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I've been having problems with WU as well. As you described in your first post, I have that problem as well. I can access the WU site directly, sometimes the IE window stops responding. Close it, reopen it again, does the same as well. And when I can get in and download the updates, the updates stops downloading and stays there, and whats worse I can't even end the task through task manager. This problem has been going on for several months and Microsoft hasn't even fixed it yet.And I've reinstalled Windows, the problem was still persisting. Same with Server 2003 as well.
