ok when i start my windows it gets ip from dhcp but when server restarts or shut down my workstation changes to 169.254... but the lease time of my ip is 24 hours.

why that happens?

Nothing is wrong; that is how it works. A full-blown discussion on the odd behaviors of DHCP is beyond a forum post so please refer to this: http://www.dhcp-handbook.com/dhcp_faq.html

A lease time isn't *really* guaranteed. Most windows clients request a new IP (lease renewal) half-way through the lease anyway.

Bottom line: don't count on DHCP leases if you need a static IP.

Depending on what kind of server have, static will likely be easier. If you have lots of clients you will want to use a high IP in the subnet range (easy)...or reserve that IP on the DHCP server (a bit harder).

@TAiN

that's how i configured my office lan. works flawless.

@fatalwoomera

you will need the mac adress of your nic. then go into server and reserve the ip for that mac and set the lease time to maximum.
