Woomera Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 ok when i start my windows it gets ip from dhcp but when server restarts or shut down my workstation changes to 169.254... but the lease time of my ip is 24 hours.why that happens?
tain Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Nothing is wrong; that is how it works. A full-blown discussion on the odd behaviors of DHCP is beyond a forum post so please refer to this: http://www.dhcp-handbook.com/dhcp_faq.htmlA lease time isn't *really* guaranteed. Most windows clients request a new IP (lease renewal) half-way through the lease anyway.Bottom line: don't count on DHCP leases if you need a static IP.
Woomera Posted June 14, 2006 Author Posted June 14, 2006 thanks.i guess i have to reserve an ip for my client and set the limit to forever or just use static.
tain Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Depending on what kind of server have, static will likely be easier. If you have lots of clients you will want to use a high IP in the subnet range (easy)...or reserve that IP on the DHCP server (a bit harder).
nitroshift Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 or reserve that IP on the DHCP server (a bit harder).@TAiNthat's how i configured my office lan. works flawless.@fatalwoomerayou will need the mac adress of your nic. then go into server and reserve the ip for that mac and set the lease time to maximum.
