I need to rename the ODBCJT32.dll file on my windows ME PC, unfortunately I am unable to do so, says file in use.

Can anyone help.

#2 have you tried unlocking it using an app like Unlocker? http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

It is a file normally protected from change by SFP.

And Unlocker does not work on 9x systems I believe.

I am not too much a SFP specialist as it is removed from my ME system, but yes, in principle, System File Protection prevents changes to protected files.

What do you exactly need to do ?

a piece of software uses this file, but it may be corrupt or out of data, just thought I'd try and rename it then copy across a more uptodate file.

Copy the new file to your hard drive, then use some boot disk to replace it under DOS.

Or use SFC

There is no SFC on WinME.

Assuming odbcjt32.dll is located in the folder c:\windows\system, and further assuming that you have copied the new file to c:\windows\temp, do the following:

Using NOTEPAD, open the file c:\windows\wininit.ini

Add the following two lines:

[rename]

c:\windows\system\odbcjt32.dll=c:\windows\temp\odbcjt32.dll

Restart WinME

Windows ME runs on a base DOS structure.

There is NO file you can't delete or rename from the DOS prompt when you boot up with a DOS boot disk.

That's the pure Beauty of a FAT-32 formatted HD. Every file on that HD is easily accessable, in DOS.
