sonu27 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 (edited) Before, I used to type "regedit" into the Run Dialog (Windows Key + R), and RegEdit would open.I recently got a small virus/worm and this no longer happens for me anymore. What happens when is a MS-DOS window opens, with the title (no quotes): “C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com”. And CPU usage storms to 100% while it does nothing.I can access RegEdit if I open it manual or using a shortcut, but this method no longer works, when it should. Can anyone please help me fix this? I really need you help. See the attached file to see how it looks. This worm was Win32/VB.D worm.PLEASE HELP? Edited June 10, 2006 by sonu27
T D Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Er... try typing regedit.exe because when you type regedit, it's this "regedit.com" application appearing. If it works, delete regedit.com from your windows or system32 folder (I think it varies) and you should be able to access regedit.exe just by typing regedit.
bledd Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 T D is right, there should be nothing called regedit.com on your pc, and its probably in the s32 folder (if not do search for it) and enable viewing all hidden and system files, chances are its hidden..delete it and i'd run a full virus scan, with nod32 or something
sonu27 Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 Deleted it.There was a regedit.com in system32 folder, hidden and marked as a OS file.
LLXX Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 If it still doesn't work then extract the original regedit.exe from the XP CD.
T D Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 If it still doesn't work then extract the original regedit.exe from the XP CD.REGEDIT.EXE by default is not hidden or marked as a protected os file. And in my XP Home SP2, regedit is in WINDOWS folder, not sys32, so try looking there first.
