raza Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 I bought this 256 Mb mini Sd card, but instead of having 256 mb memory in it it has only 243 mb so I was wondering what happened to the remaining memory? This is the case with all the mem cards I have whether Sd or MMC, all have different space.I am thinking of buying 1 Gb card and I was thinking if this is the case then I will lose around 50 mb in that card which is a lot.So is there any way to get that memory back?
gamehead200 Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Companies advertise 256MB as around 256,000,000B, which is not correct. 256,000,000B is approximately 244MB... You can't regain the space because it does not exist.

LLXX Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Companies advertise 256MB as around 256,000,000B, which is not correct. 256,000,000B is approximately 244MB... You can't regain the space because it does not exist. That's for hard drives. A real 256Mb card should store exactly 268435456 bytes, it's just a natural power of 2 for solid-state memory.Format it fully, then tell us what it says under Capacity in the drive properties. If it's still 244, the remaining 12Mb are bad sectors which are common in cheap solid-state memory.

LLXX Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Depends on cluster size.Size: FS: Space occupied by FAT512 (FAT32) - 8Mb1024 (FAT32) - 4Mb2048 (FAT32) - 2Mb4096 (FAT32) - 1Mb8192 (FAT32) - 512Kb16384 (FAT32) - 256Kb16384 (FAT16) - 128Kb32768 (FAT32) - 128Kb32768 (FAT16) - 64Kb
