superpimp Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Windows XP isn't working quite properly anymore, sometimes when I boot, I see no errors but nothing will start, like ie, MSN, and other apps. Other times it works just like it should. Now, I was thinking of doing a repair installation and I was wondering if it removes all documents and settings/installed apps?thx!Title edited -- Please, use [TAGS] in your topic's title. Please follow XP Forum Rules from now on.--Sonic
Sonic Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Repair windows doesn't affect your personnal data, it keep your user profile too, so if the problem is in your profile the repair does nothing ...Try to create a new user and look if the problem remains, if yes the repair can help you.Goodbye.
nitroshift Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 you might need to reinstall some drivers though.
superpimp Posted April 30, 2006 Author Posted April 30, 2006 well, it can't be a user problem, beacause all users have it. Now I can only boot in safe boot, if I start windows normally, nothing will open :s
PsiMoon314 Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Hi,I would be inclined to test for Viruses and Spyware on all user accounts before doing anything else. You never know what you or other users have picked up on their travels around the web.Kind RegardsSimon
superpimp Posted April 30, 2006 Author Posted April 30, 2006 I did,I ran a virus scan, spyware/adware scan, I even checked with microsoft's tool for deleting malware. They all give nothing bad.
spacesurfer Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 not all viruses and especially spyware/malware are detected. it does suspiciously look like malware problem.
superpimp Posted April 30, 2006 Author Posted April 30, 2006 so, what would be best then? Repair install or something else?
spacesurfer Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 correct me if i'm wrong but a repair install only fixes WINDOWS system files.any infected files belong to other programs will not be repaired (or documents.)
