erpdude8 Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) I have tested Foxit Reader 1.3 and 2.0, both with and without gdiplus.dll and the image quality and text readability is still very poor, much worse than with Adobe Reader 6.0.Just try to read this document: http://www.ryston.com/x/foxit/01561329.pdf with Fit Page and Full Screen settings - all the text displayed by Adobe Reader 6.0 can be easily read while the text displayed by Foxit reader not.PetrEdit: On exit Foxit Reader caused series of GPFs and finally Fatal Exception with blue screen - something that I haven't seen for several months. And corrupted filesystem on all disks. I was sure my last try to use it.That's odd. I did NOT have these problems on my WinME computer when using Foxit Reader 2.0 build 1606 and reading that PDF file from that Ryston web site. No GPF and BSOD errors when closing FoxitReader. Older builds of FoxitReader 2.0 may have the problem but seemed to be fixed in build 1606 which was released in mid April 2007.perhaps there is something wrong with Petr's machine and the cause of the problems aren't related to Foxit Readerany one care to use Adobe Reader Lite? search the MSFN forums for this app. it's almost as good as using FoxitReader. perhaps Petr should try out Adobe Reader Lite. or better yet, try Sumatra PDF Viewer from here:http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/ Edited July 4, 2007 by erpdude8
erpdude8 Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) Wow.I honestly though Adobe would leave windows 98/Me users high and dry.I'm glad I was mistaken.Does anyone know if Acrobat Reader 5 has the problem too?Adobe Reader 5.x may be vulnerable but no patch for it is offered at the Adobe site (unless your using Linux/Unix)plus Acrobat Reader 5 cannot access PDF files created in newer PDF v1.5 to 1.7 formats. Shaddam's quote from an old post:but problem with AR 5.x is , no support for pdf version 1.5 & 1.6 Edited July 4, 2007 by erpdude8
shaddam Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 news from foxitreader version v2.1 is out.but (from my experience) not recommendable anymore for win9x users... to bloated, instablities , seems not testest at all for win9x systems :/personally i stick on version 1.3 build 0930http://us03.foxitsoftware.com/foxitreader/FoxitReader21.zip...but there is hope! a new project, even opensource and based on two pdf render engines, sumatra pdf reader v0.7very stable, very comptible, very small, support pdfversions > 1.4 & and not footstep in system (no install, no registry entries...)very promising!http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/
awergh Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 how is foxit reader 2 bloated? (dont have 2.1) its a 3.6mb exe file and a couple of registry entries, thats hardly bloated if you think about acherobat reader
shaddam Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 how is foxit reader 2 bloated? (dont have 2.1) its a 3.6mb exe file and a couple of registry entries, thats hardly bloated if you think about acherobat readerif you calculate it in percentage it is enormous increase... 1MB > 3.6MB -> astonishing increase by 260%! second reason for calling it bloated, they introduced features in the reader which are hardly be used even in an PDF editor ... so the taskbar gets also bloated, introduction of errors... etc.but you are right compared against the bloatware of acrobat... it pretty slim, but i don't like the direction of development it looks like they try to copy acrobat... i would like if foxitreader stays feature minimized like the first releases.
jpeters2 Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Adobe Reader 6.0.6 update - multiple languagesThe Adobe Reader 6.0.6 update fixes a number of security vulnerabilities. Adobe recommends that all Adobe Reader 6.0.x users apply this update.Security Fixes in Reader 6.0.6This patch release addresses several security vulnerabilities including a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Adobe Reader 6.0.5 and earlier versions that could allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript into a browser session. Additional vulnerabilities have been identified in these versions of Reader that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits them to take control of the affected system. It is recommended that users update to the most current version of Adobe Reader available for their platform.Details of these vulnerabilities are provided in this security bulletin located here - http://www.adobe.com/go/apsb07-01 http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3579MDGx, I see that your Acrobat Reader update section http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#PDFdoesn't list this 6.0.6 update yet. Thank you for all your work in documenting/linking/hosting/etc. all of the official and unofficial patches.
eidenk Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) They could link it direct from their security bulletin really. If you start from there you are lost. Edited November 4, 2007 by eidenk

shaddam Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 update on an alternative PDF Viewer (Opensource, slim+fast, multi-platform, PDF support >1.4), Sumatra PDF v0.8http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/works on win98se but with smaller flaws (e.g. menubar is missing,... )a win9x maintainer is needed for testing and providing smaller fixes (which seems to be welcome, see post http://blog.kowalczyk.info/forum_sumatra/t...77&Posts=1)
