Hi

I am using DSL connection from SBC yahoo and i have the XP firewall enabled.

I dont use any other anti-virus software.

From time to time, I notice that under network connections->DSL connection->properties(right click)

->Advanced, in the settings tab there are new connection created, such as:

msmsgs 1756 (or some random number) !!

I never created such service and neither did i enable it.

I wonder if anyone has something more to offer on this !!

That's Windows Messenger...Someone must have opened the ports for it...

what do you mean "someone" ??

is the system responsible for this ?? is it a common thing ?

No, its normal. If you're signed in to Windows Messenger, it has to open a port to transfer data to the Messenger servers. Same applies for any app that uses the Internet to function. Don't worry.

Aye, but the firewall does block it with older versions of msn, you need to take your firewall off if you want to upload something to someone which is weird because the XP firewall doesn't filter things you upload so god knows why, lol.

It doesnt happen with MSN 6, but then again its a bit slow.

I think you need to swtich off the XP firewall because then you cannot accept incoming request for transfer from other computers.

Ofcourse I am assuming that msn does file transfer on a seperate port which is somehow not accepted by XP firewall.

Anyone care to shed more light into this ???

With Windows messenger and with pretty much any IM program, they use a challenge/response setup. You challenge the other person "Do you wish to accept this file?" and you wait for a response with a "Yes." or "No.". The problem lies in getting the response part. The firewall is probably blocking the response and not letting it through. The other person probably gets the challenge though.
