  1. I am going out on a limb and assuming that you guys are running top shelf hardware i.e. cisco routers/switches in addition to your software firewalls (CheckPoint and such)... haven't your guys figured out how to block the port being used by the IM clients at least on the router/switch (hardware layer) then move to the "advanced" layer of the software configs... via your firewalls? Yes you are correct 350 individual firewalls is overkill and pointless especially since you cannot manage that ever. Cbay... MCSE, MCSA, CCSA, MCP, A+
  2. Uninstall SP2 and reinstall Norton2003. I would wait until the general public can access SP2 "officially" before updating it. I spoke with some pals at MS and they advised me not to install it just yet... just passin along the info. Use your best judgement... its your system!!!
  3. GB, Try this app..... http://www.kixscripts.com/ Depending on what you are wanting to accomplish, this will most likely help you right out. Cbay
  4. I am going to go out on a limb here but if you have your NICs set to Auto Detect or Auto Select/ Hardware Default, you are only going to go as fast as the Hub/Switch device is set to by default. I would set all the NICs manually to 100MB/Full Duplex and if you can.. set the switch ports to the same speeds You did mention that you are in Full Duplex, but neglected to mention the speed setting. I would hate to assume such a thing.
  5. Ok so you have your router issuing DHCP addresses, cool. You may want to give this machine a Static IP address and configure the ports it uses to get out manually on the Router. I have the same setup on my network but have not encountered the same issue you are with the Outgoing Net traffic in that regard. You may try another method.. again issue one of the machines a static IP, Drop that IP /Machine into the DMZ on your router. Ensure you have a personal firewall installed and configured properly and give that method a go. Granted the latter is a last resort option, but it will work without fail. Try this url: http://www.preinheimer.com/metamachine/www...ll-linksys.html Cheers and Good Hunting!! CBay
  6. Just to add a twist to CH's delimma-- does anyone know how to make the desktop icons transparent to the wallpaper as the fresh installed version of XP does? Would rather them be transparent than spend time trying to match the background colors of the desktop to the wall paper. Could make a dude go mad if I did not have a life outside of the PCs.. lol. Thanks gang!!
  7. Whats your status on this issue?
  8. Take a look here: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msnm
  9. You may get it to work without "upping your OS" to SE... but then it may not work properly either. If the option is availible.. I would up to Windows XP and call it a day, bro.
  10. try this link... http://www.dougknox.com/ go to Utilities. there is a link to dowload a vb script... Find Product CD Key Win9x-ME. Should get you going with all the tools. I would then jot that info down and slap it inside the case of the machine you are workin on.. so you know its there when you mate feels the need to reinstall 98 again. Cheers. CB
  11. are you using the correct username (login) and password? Is your workstation (PC with this problem) managed or locked down to prevent this application from running ? Do you have an account for which to add the login information? Is it active? Can you login to hotmail from the same PC and not MSN Messenger? Throw a bone here, we need the info!!!
  12. try this: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1153/ Windows maintains a cached copy of all the icons on the system to avoid having to reload the icons every time they are displayed. If this icon cache becomes corrupt then the wrong icons may be shown. To clear the icons cache make sure you can view hidden files and then open your Windows directory in Explorer and delete the file called "ShellIconCache". When you restart Windows the icon cache file will be automatically recreated.
  13. You can also use a pure boot manager to go between os' I would suggest www.osloader.com or http://www.v-com.com/product/pc8_ind.html
  14. Why not get your camera, get a USB media card reader transfer your image files that way from camera to PC and call it a day?
  15. You may try looking either in the root of C: or in C:\Windows for a folder WIN98. From there you can run setup again. OR you can boot to a dos prompt.. goto C:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe and install from there. What I would suggest before you do that .. is that you locate the product id from the registry first. Technically, since you are reinstalling over itself.. you should not be asked for it but you may be.
  16. I had the same issue back in the day and came up with a solution: Because of the 2 GB limitiation for an individual .pst file within Outlook which often comprises all of the Mailbox and subfolders, the workaround/fix using the limits I found were: 1. Create individual .PST files per Outlook folder/box. What you are in effect doing is now giving each individual folder/box its own 2GB limit within the Mailbox. 2. You have also have the oppertunity to set this to happen on any set interval you see fit so that at any given time, you can export the latest information into the appropriate .PST file and burn them -- transport them--- do what you like with the files. That worked for me in my situations both on and off an Exchange Server running Outlook XP and backwards. Good luck.
  17. Ok, lets do this step by step: You have one PC (PC1). PC1 has 2 NICs. PC2 has 1 NIC. PC1, NIC1 is connected to PC2 NIC1 via crossover cable. PC1, NIC2 is either providing you Internet access or is it just in the PC? I would assume there’s a good reason you dropped it into the box? I would surmise that you are sharing an internet connection for both machines. Do you have the XP firewall engaged? This could be interrupting your connections as well unless you have configured it properly. Ok. First question: Can you see each computer in My Network Places\ Workgroups with consistency? Does each computer have a network protocol installed and if so, what is it and can you view the properties of each one? Are you trying to truly share files or do you want the ability to do so at your convenience? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? We need to confirm/add entries into your TCP/IP properties manually to make this work with consistency. Here is what you should need to do on both machines: Right click on My Network Places and go to properties. Go to the General Tab and you will see components of the connection with checkmarks in the boxes to indicate they are being used by the connection. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties. Select the Use The following IP address option. This will open the IP Address, Subnet mask and Default Gateway options for you. Add the IP Address’ mentioned in the previous post there—10.0.0.1. The Subnet mask should auto-populate with 255.255.255.0. You should not need a default gateway for this but if you like, add 10.0.0.1 on both. Right click My Computer. Go to properties and go to the network identification tab. Note the names of each PC and join them to a workgroup – named whatever you want ( I suggest OZ) then reboot. By default upon installation of the OS, there are administrative shares created the C$ and ADMINC$ and enabled. To access computers on a network (of which Peer-to-Peer is a type) in either of the following simple methods: 1. Map a network drive to a location on either PC. Create a folder location on both machines, name it the same thing on both. Map drives to each share from each machine to the other. Use the share location as a general location for files and such. 2. Connect to the C$ share from the run command line. The entry would look like this: \\computername\c$ then press enter. The C drive contents of the other machine will appear. You can then map a drive to this location should you choose. This should get you going.
  18. If I understand your issue. you have created a peer to peer simple connection to two PC's. This connection worked until you had to FORMAT one of the two. Since the rebuild, you cannot re-establish the networking connection. This goes from very simple solution to a little odd.. depending on your operating systems in use. I would, like Rufo said, use TCP/IP as the protocol and the important thing you must remember is to keep the IP address for both machines in the same subnet--- if your IP Address on PC1 is 10.0.0.1 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 the address of PC2 should be 10.0.0.2, Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. I would create a common workgroup and put both machines into it. Enable File and Print sharing.. share directories that you want shared. Reboot and away you go. If you are using say, windows 2k, you can skip the above workgroup steps if your IP range and subnet is the same, you can go to the run command line type in \\computername\c$ press enter and as long as your user/login credentials are the same on both machines you are into the C drive (or which ever you need to access change the drive letter) to share files. This is the Administrative share that you are accessing. Things to note... when connecting PC-to-PC Crossover. PC to network Straight through, network device to network device Crossover Hope this helps... Good luck.
  19. Windows 2000 does have dual (multiple) monitor support. The rub is all of your hardware must be identical. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...us;238886#Task1 It also supports 3rd party solutions to Multi monitor support: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;162928 I agree, you may want to try the Matrox in another slot.. generally the 1st PCI slot (depending on the Mobo mfr) may be slated for primary Aux sound cards. If you pop the VC into slot 2-3 and on.. you should be cool.
  20. You should be able to do this ... without too much incident. I would use a boot manager or set up your boot sector manually from FDISK though. Here is another link that may come in handy should you give this a go: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...39-e3f3aa5e5b25 Hope this helps you.
  21. If not, you can always go the VMWare route: http://www.vmware.com/download/
