[Question] Remove Windows Update Uninstall Information

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how to remove the folders that are created in your windows directory after installing windows update? I believe the folders store uninstall information. Since I'm not having any problems, I will not be uninstalling those updates and wish to remove them to free space.

I searched this site but didn't find anythign.

Normally, these folders are named like $NtUninstallKBXXXXX$ and so on for Windows 2000 but the naming is similar for Windows XP.

Please NOW in Microsoft Windows XP section, use [TAGS] in your topic's title.

I always delete everything that starts with $ in my Windows Folder.

There are no adverse effects of this, I presume?

I thought there was some function from within windows that allowed you to purse those files.

Nah, just delete 'em in Explorer. The only adverse effect is that you won't be able to uninstall the hotfixes already installed on your machine. If you aren't having any problems with any of them then the directories are safe to delete.

I always delete them directly, and my computer have not happened anything.

I think you can do the same.

Yes, it's wise to test the pathces and hotfixes for a week or two and if you're having no problems at all, safely delete these folders..

Thats what I do as well. Wait for a bit and then wipe out the installers. Also be sure to run some reg cleaners cause there is a good bunch of crap left over after the deletion.
