[Help] Windows XP validation

Hi there,

Apologies for the long post.

I've just formatted my drives for the start of the new year and have begun the tedious process of re-installing everything. I've come to the step of updating windows via windows update and have had massive trouble trying to access it.

It prompts you whether you'd like to use express or custom (i've tried both with the same result) and then starts checking for the latest updates for your computer. A screen comes up saying, "to get updates, you must first validate your windows software", which i reply yes to.

When it try's to validate, an information bar appears just below the toolbar saying, "Internet explorer stopped the previous page from installing an ActiveX control on your computer. Click here to go back and install this software..." which i do.

Then a box appears saying:

-----------------------------------------------------

Windows Explorer - Security Warning

Windows has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher.

Name: ?linkid=39204

Publisher: Unknown Publisher

-----------------------------------------------------

It then gives you an alternative method to validate windows saying "Your current browser cannot run the ActiveX control required by the genuine Windows validation process. Let's try validating a different way:" and gives you a link to click.

When you follow that link it again brings up a box this time saying:

------------------------------------------------------

File Download - Security Warning

Do you want to run or save this file?

Name: legitcheck.hta

Type: HTML Application, 2.82 KB

From: www.microsoft.com

[run, save or cancel]

------------------------------------------------------

When you click run, a new page opens titled "Genuine Windows Hypertext Application" with the same unknown publisher security warning as above appearing before it. The page has a different message on it saying:

Validation Not Completed: ActiveX Error[0x80080206]

Why did it not validate?

There are several reasons why validation may not have succeeded.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Tool requires the user account to have administrative privileges on the computer.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Tool requires access and is unable to communicate with the Microsoft validation servers. Please click here to learn more about troubleshooting your antivirus, antispyware, Internet Explorer and firewall settings.

****..... when you follow the link "click here" it takes you to a windows genuine advantage - diagnostic site which doesn't really do anything as far as i could see after trying to run through the 5 step process it gives you.

ANYWAY ..... i managed to get windows automatic update working and have been able to download updates that my system needs (ie. Service pack 2, security updates etc) ... but i still can't validate my copy of windows or access windows update which i'd like to be able to do.

I've tried going to Internet Options/Security and setting it to low so everything is enabled or on prompt and that hasn't helped. I've tried enabling all the ActiveX questions which hasn't worked either.

My only other idea is to ring microsoft and see if there's some sort of ActiveX related problem going on at the moment with windows update and/or the windows xp validation procedure.

Could something have gone wrong in the re-installation process?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.

Regards, andoc

When it asks to validate, always choose the alternative method (download the file) instead. The file is named LegitCheck.EXE, not .HTA. Download, run it, and write the code it supplies into the validation box, then can continue.

hey pawan,

cheers, yeah i've downloaded that already but was confused as to what to do with the files within it. A few dll files: legitCheckControl.dll and GWFSPIDGen.dll as well as a LegitCheckControl.inf file.

thanks, andoc

Just for info : You can run the original .exe to install silently (yes without any switches) and delete it after. The extraction part it's for splitstream process ...
