Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum so I hope I am getting this right. I am trying to load Windows 98SE. I presently have windows 98. I am being asked to download windows 98 upgrade before I will be allowed to download windows SE.

Does anyone know where I can download the windows 98 upgrade?

Many thanks,

Vince

erm, bit hard to undertand exactly what you want. All the products you mention cost money and I don't think the staff here would appreciate people asking for pirate software.

There is no upgrade you can (legally) download to convert 98 to 98SE, you need to purchase a 98SE CD. Once you have a retail CD you can upgrade your 98 to 98SE.

Maybe I should clarify my question. I do have a legal copy of windows 98se however I am curious to know if there is a "free" download of the windows 98 upgrade or if I need to purchase this?

Thank you!

 You must purchase the 98upgrade cd in order to go from 98 to 98se. it makes more sense to just format c and install 98se from stratch but thats up 2 you. bootdisks for 98se can be found at www.bootdisks.com. hope this helps.

I don't think they even sell 98SE CDs anymore...

However, I believe you could register on the Microsoft site for some Academic related thing (the registration is free, and what you get is the standard 98se retail distro with the license to install on an unlimited number of computers for non-commercial/educational use) which I forget the name of.

ngtowl,

It ain't no big deal if you have a legal 98/SE OEM CD with the 25 digit key. Yes?

(a windows 98/se upgrade CD would be nice, but not required for this job)

I do that all the time. It's just that the OEM CD wants to load to a blank hard drive.

It doesn't like seeing an OS already loaded.

To trick it into loading, you must first make yourself a 98 Boot floppy, if you don't already have one.

Then, on your hard drive make a new folder and call it WIN98SE.

Then, put in the 98/SE CD and don't let it run. Open it up in Windows Explorer and copy all the files from the \Win98\ folder to the new folder you made on your hard drive.

NOW,,,, reboot your system with your boot floppy.

You must rename win.com to something else. you can do that by typing this line at the DOS prompt.

ren C:\windows\win.com C:\windows\win.old

Be sure to leave the space after 'ren' and before the second C:

At the DOS prompt, type C:\win98SE\setup /ie /is

(leave a space before each /. and press Enter

Windows 98SE setup will run and begin your install. It will accept your old registry, drivers and all data on the drive will remain intact. You'll need the 25 digit registration Key. YOU need NOT register with MS.

This process takes about an hour on the average system. The less RAM you have, the longer it will take.

Good Luck,

Print this out and keep at hand while you do the process, so you don't miss a step.
