Restarting w/out permission

Featured Replies

XP has done this several times on me now, it just suddenly restarts (always when I'm right in middle of sumthing important!) and then it says "serious system error" when I get back in again......has it happened 2 anyone else or is it just me?

That's the Home edition I use btw

does it just restart, or you get BSOD first (blue screen)?

another person had the same problem today....

coincedence ha....

it might be because of the CPU overheating, you should definitely check your fans, if they working properly.

and dont forget the antivirus.....

Didn't you *just* reinstall it?

Do you have Ad-Aware? Anvitivirus program? You probably have a virus of some sort. Generally (not always), XP will specify if it's a hardware issue with a nice BSoD.

well, in that case, its really strange....

ou, and you have a laptop right?

any hardware you installed in it (PCMCI since its a leptop)?

if the temperature ok, and you say you have no viruses,

i would search for hardware problem, did you install any hardware recently?

anyway, you just reinstalled the leptop, its probably time to reinstall the desktop :)

i know the problem as it has happened to me before

3 possible options

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q316416

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q317277

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q317277

which ever one applies to u, just download the patch and let us know how things go...

there are other alternative options, but we shall see how these go :)

thanx john, it was the first 1, but funnily enough I'm on 56k not broadband or DSL......

Weird, I'll see what happens, it's only happened 2x

And thanks vcant, but I cant reinstall, mum would flip her nut cos it's her computer+she says I break it....if she found out I'd b in trouble :)

mine used to restart by itself as well.

i found the problem to be dodgy ram.

had to buy a new stick but this time i went with 333mhz ddr :)

works like a dream now, well....cept for the whole bill gates invading everything...but ill let that pass.

This time

hehehe

I've found out it's a driver problem but I havent a clue which one it is

If I restore it to last known good config what will happen 2 my files etc?

how do you know its a driver problem, i mean, how did you find out, may be we can trace the driver...

as for system restere, i never used it, so im not sure, but you can allways backup important files to another drive

It said it could specifiy what driver it was, cos it wasnt sure

I used error report which took me onto some microsoft crash analysis page....

It's not System Restore, cos I've used that quite a lot+u dont lose files

I don't know what it is but that's thwat they suggested I do, roll back to last good config......
