Nice list.

On your site you have

Under investigation: Windows Script 5.6, WMP10, WMP 9/10 codecs, WUv4 and Office Update.

. Windows Server 2003 SP1 includes WMP10, so that is not needed. It also includes Windows Script 5.6.0.8827 (Windows Script 5.6 downloadable is 8825). The only things on that list which are safe to add for SP1 would be WUv4 and Office Update.

All of those things can be added for RTM if you are including that.

You mean "RTFM" or just "RTM"? That's a HUGE difference...

I am running a 2K3 enterprise server trial w/ SP1. Msxml4.dll is in that folder, 4.20.9818.0. SP1 includes msxml4 SP2, but not the 887606 update.

I mean the original release (SP0).

That's odd...

I checked several editions; the originals/SP0s/RTMs/Golds/virgins don't have it, and the SP1 installer doesn't have it either. Are you sure you didn't install it later on, or that it didn't come with one of the programs you have installed?

I'm pretty sure I didn't. But, I probably did. That computer had 98SE on it, XP new install, 2003 new install. Some files were probably missed as there were no formats in between.

Well... You could check for the existence of "msxml4.dl_" in the I386 folder of your 2003 CD. If it's not there, it's not there... (some deduction power... I'm getting better every day... )

No, it's not there. It must have been installed after Windows was installed.

I just checked out the WM 9/10 codecs stuff. It looks like both packages that I link to on the XP page contain newer binaries than the ones on 2K3. I'm gonna do a full HFSLIP now, with 9/10 codecs, WUv4 and OU...

Note in between: don't include KB890046 for now, or edit TXTSETUP.SIF prior to burning the CD:

Search for "w03a2409.dll" and remove "ECHO " from the beginning of that line. Then make your CD.

I turned on my computer today and noticed that Automatic Updates was downloading something. Does anyone know what that update may have been?

I am running XP SP2, and my computer was completely up-to-date before today.

No, I don't really see anything useful in WindowsUpdate.log. I found that it tried to download some CAB file with a TXT file in it. It also said "0 updates detected," I think. Could it just be that AU checked for updates and for some reason is requiring me to restart?

Sounds highly unlikely. See in Add/Remove Programs, then (check "Show updates").
