Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I have some thermal paste that came with my heat sink and the thermal paste that i order and it been taking a long time to be shipped and i don't want to wait anymore becasue i have all of my pc parts so i was thinking to use the supplied paste that came with my heat sink for now and when i get my new stuff, can i scrape off the old stuff and apply the new stuff whould that be fine?P.S Iv'e never done this before and was just asking before i do it.
DigeratiPrime Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 i would try to find out how much longer you have to wait until you recieve the paste you ordered before doing anything. but yes you can remove the old paste. just wipe it off the core with a napkin and clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, reapply paste.
suryad Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 DigeratiPrime is right...I have also seen people sanding down the bottom of the heat sink till it was shiny like a mirror...and that helps a lot as well I have read.
ripken204 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 dont use a napkin. the best is to use a coffee filter since it wont break apart like a napkin. i wouldnt use the tape tho, unless you want to just get things up and running and once the paste comes, then go ahead and put that on.
Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 What do you mean by tape? The stuff that came with my heat sink is high quality too i guss., i could just put this stuff on for now and just put the new stuff on some other time.
ripken204 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 wow, for some reason i thought u said that u had a thermal tape/pad that came with it. oh well, use the PASTE that came with it then and then change it with the AS5, i hope thats what u ordered.
Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 I ordered this stuff http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...Tab=11&NoMapp=0
Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 could i use rubbing alcohol to remove the old paste?
ripken204 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 use a coffee filter with rupping alcohol on it. make sure that you let it try before applying and new thermal paste
Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 ok thanks that should only take about 30 seconds right
Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 I can't find any coffee filters, Is there a Alternative?
ripken204 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 credit card/piece of plastic to scrape it off
Nerwin Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 ok good becasue i have some thing like that. Thanks
big poppa pump Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Go down to your local walgreens or walmart and buy dry lens cleaner. They cost about a buck or something. They are anti-static. You use any credit card or plastic you gonna end up scratching the bottom of the heatsink
