Hey there fellow msfn'ers!?!

As the topic title says, cant connect via UNC ie: \\computername\. I can only connect when using the ip address ie: \\192.168.1.xxx.

This happens on both PCs. XP firewalls are enabled on both with file and printer sharing enabled. I am also abled to terminal service to each other but only when using the IP address to connect.

I tried ipconfig/flushdns but no luck.

I am probably missing a simple setting.

Thanks for your help,

ceez

on same workgroup name?

can you see computers listed under network neighborhood in windows explorer?

do you have any drives being shared? or printers being shared?

what happens when you disable the firewalls on both machines?

are you logged in as an administrator?

**** I forgot all that info...silly me...

Yes, workgroup = ceez

I just get to workgroup, select "ceez" and it's blank.
do you have any drives being shared? or printers being shared?

nope, no drives shared, only the Administrative share on both pc's "c$".

what happens when you disable the firewalls on both machines?
I still can only connect via IP, I have the printers and file setting checked on both.
are you logged in as an administrator?

yes

phew...

thanks

I always find home networking infinately more difficult than corporate. Are you getting the dialog box that asks you for credentials to access the share? Make absolutely certain that both computers are getting the same network settings like the default gateway. Probably using DHCP, but I thought I'd throw it in there in case you've opted to go static. Is NetBIOS enabled?

Well slap me silly...

It was the NetBIOS, it was disabled on both PC's. Enabled, rebooted and wallah! There are my pc's!

thanks!
