datasafe Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 Hi allWonder if someone could help me.At home I have a P-2-P network of 6 PCs each running WindowsXP Pro. I know how to setup several user accounts on ONE PC and it works fine - each user signs in and has their own folders and files and desktop schemes, great! What I would like to achieve is this:The ability for a user to sign in on any of the networked PCs so they get the same desktop, file & folder access etc as if they had signed in on the PC on which the user account was created. Is this possible and how? Many thanksJohn
rik Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 From what I understand what you want is not possible. All the user settings are kept in a file locally on each system. You would have to recreate and duplicate each users settings on each machine individually to accomplish this and ensure that all files or apps that they work on are available on a common drive somewhere in the network. It can be done but not as easily as you are hoping I'm afraid...
nekkid Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 Technically speaking, it is possible. You would need an extra piece of software though. Most likely one you'd have to write, or ask someone to write. Probably very simple. It would run on all the machines, and go out on to the network and match the content of one computer's "Document and Settings" folder with the rest. Wow...it sounds simplier then I thought. To bad I can't code
gamehead200 Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 You would have to setup a domain using one of the computers as a server (preferrably with Windows 2000 Server) and setup user accounts on that computer instead on each individual computer. Then you would have to setup the individual computers to find the domain to log into...I'll try finding a tutorial on this...I've played around with it on my dad's company's server...BTW, this will NOT allow you to have the same desktop and settings...
