200 gig hd on 98se?

Featured Replies

How must I partition a 200 gig hd on a 98se machine (PIII 860hz) for the sys to recognise all of the space on the drive. I'll be using the drive for data only.

Thanks

:hello: i believe 98se wont reconize hd over 138gig so u must either split it into 100 each or at least keep either paration under 138gig .

And you might not even want to use the max of 138. Keep in mind, the larger the partition is, the more space FAT32 will waste. I don't have any hard figures, but even if you can get Win98SE to support large drives (200meg or more) you don't want to.

This is one of the many reasons why NTFS was created.

You normally can't use all the disk space even with partitioning. Beware.

See here for a detailed discussion of the 137Gb (actually 128Gb) limit: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46752

You would need a suitably modified ESDI_506.PDR to use all that space. However, FAT32 can handle partitions up to 2 terabytes so that shouldn't be a problem.

@travisowens: NTFS actually requires *more* overhead than FAT32...
