Aegis Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 What causes processors to die out? Why does overclocking accelerate the process?
Aegis Posted December 18, 2005 Author Posted December 18, 2005 So if I overclock without increasing the voltage, then the processor will die out at normal rate?
At0mic Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 (edited) no its the heat - they burn out. Just like a light bulb burns out I guess. You could make a light bulb brighter by increasing the voltage but it will burn out much sooner.Anyway, chips have a life span of around 10 years I think so if overclocking brings this down to 5 years - who cares? ripken204 Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 (edited) more voltage=more heatunless you have water or phase changeand no one rly knows how long a chip will last, could be 100yrs and overclocking it will take 30yrs off of it..... but do we rly care?just like u said, 5 yrs, who cares? if you havnt upgraded your comp in 5yrs then either your poor or there is something wrong with you Edited December 19, 2005 by ripken204
At0mic Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 found some good info for you to take a look athttp://www.overclockers.com/tips30/
Zxian Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 more voltage=more heatunless you have water or phase changeHigher clock = more stress on the circuitsIf we were to go back to the old car-vs-computer analogy - lets say your CPU has a "redline" of 6000 RPM. You do what you need to push that redline up to 6500RPM. Even if your computer is sitting there not doing anything, there's more stress on the engine. There comes a point past which your engine just won't go any further, so you start pumping more air and fuel (i.e. voltage) to give it more power. Now you can get it to 7000 RPM.and no one rly knows how long a chip will last, could be 100yrs and overclocking it will take 30yrs off of it..... but do we rly care?just like u said, 5 yrs, who cares? if you havnt upgraded your comp in 5yrs then either your poor or there is something wrong with youWell... I plan on keeping my computer at home for more than 5 years, because it does the job just fine, thank you. And I don't think that there's anything wrong with me.... My parents need a computer for surfing the internet and checking e-mails, word processing, etc. They've got an Athlon 1GHz that's doing the job just fine. There's absolutely no need for them to spend the extra money to get a newer and faster computer.
ripken204 Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 well for ppl who actually would like to play a game. and i mean if you havnt bought a new one either. my dad has an 8 yr old dell, 350mhz! he only does excel and internet. my sister now has my 3 yr old laptop. and then theres my new comp
Aegis Posted December 20, 2005 Author Posted December 20, 2005 What's the average life for an Opteron 165? If I did my equation right, then my overclocked Opteron will use 157 Watts (2.4Ghz). Also, the article stated that shutting down and powering up harms the processor, so would it be better to just stand by all of the time?
LLXX Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 Electromigration also occurs at a faster rate with higher CPU voltage."Electromigration refers to the gradual displacement of the metal atoms of a conductor as a result of the current flowing through that conductor"http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=MjMw

I knew what it was, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
suryad Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 No need to overclock. Just get a couple of Opteron 280s.
Aegis Posted December 21, 2005 Author Posted December 21, 2005 No need to overclock. Just get a couple of Opteron 280s.Just a couple ...If I had the money...
suryad Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 I need to build a DCC rig but I am tyring to stall as much as I can with the advent of socket F from AMD and DDR2 capable processors. Also we will have to do at least 3 months of travelling so it will be even more prudent for me to wait. I hope I can staill till 2k7 honestly when the quad core monsters come out.
