asklepios Posted March 29, 2003 Posted March 29, 2003 you seem to be trying to open a shortcut while the file to which the shortcut links to has been moved. check that the file was not moved and then try opening with a new shortcut.
mimo Posted March 29, 2003 Author Posted March 29, 2003 its not a shortcut, and this happens with any file i try to use open with on
gamehead200 Posted March 29, 2003 Posted March 29, 2003 Does this happen with every file you use that menu for?
asklepios Posted March 29, 2003 Posted March 29, 2003 which type of file are you trying to open and with which software?can you provide us with a screenshot?
MSNwar Posted March 29, 2003 Posted March 29, 2003 Some of your file types are not associated with the program that is used to open it. Associate the file(s) through Windows Explorer like this:1. Start2. All Programs3. Accessories4. Windows ExplorerTools > Folder Options. This opens the "Folder Options" applet. Select the tab "File Types".Here you will see smaller frames that itemize the Registered File Types, Extensions, etc. (For details click the question mark symbol in the upper right-hand portion of the applet and click the Registered File Types.)Last, select the program that will be used to open the file. Now, anytime you right-click the file, choose "Open With" and another pop-up menu will display the program you associated it with in the "Folder Options" applet. If all of the files on your PC are suddenly "NOT" associated with Windows Registered Programs then you have a bigger problem. The fix is to re-run your Windows Operating System CD. You do not have to re-install windows. Just place the CD in the CD-ROM drive and select Install Windows from the menu. The setup process will associate all of the Windows Programs with all of the Windows Registered File Types.Let us know if you need more information or help.Welcome to MSFN mimo
mimo Posted March 29, 2003 Author Posted March 29, 2003 this happens with any file type,so if i tried to open a jpg image with paint (it is correctly associated to ACDsee) and then click on choose program i get this error, and so on with any other file.
Aaron Posted March 30, 2003 Posted March 30, 2003 It looks like the registry values for the "Open with..." has gone missing from your registry. Unfortunately, I don't know the values to restore them, but a reinstall of Service Pack 1, or running System File Checker from the command prompt (sfc /?) will most likely restore these specific registry values.
mimo Posted March 30, 2003 Author Posted March 30, 2003 System File Checker didnt help, i tried it but the problem still presists.
asklepios Posted March 30, 2003 Posted March 30, 2003 what did you install-uninstall or change in your system that started giving you this problem?any changes that you made to your PC?do you have system restore switched on with your PC? if yes then did you try to go to a restore point?
mimo Posted March 30, 2003 Author Posted March 30, 2003 no system restore,no installs/uninstalls i used magic tweak to modify the conext menu, and undid those modifications, maybe magic tweak messed with the registry values, but how can i restore it?
Doggie Posted March 30, 2003 Posted March 30, 2003 yeh.. thats probably why.. i'll have a look on the registry and see if i can help ya fix :flowers:
