BombaTwist Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 i want to get a new video card so i can play cs:source, This Radeo 9800PRO is pretty good but im afraid it might go dead on me since some reviews said it overheated on them. any suggestions what i should do to prevent overheating if i get this card? good airflow in case maybe?(since i have a crap beige case with no fans.(btw my mobo is agp 4x which will work fine with the 9800 pro but the problem is it only has 2 plugs for case fans, one for fan on cpu and one fan that goes on the fron or the back of the case, i cant put more than 1 case fan, unless it doesnt need to be connected to the mobo.
Gouki Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 I dont know about that one. But I bought a Radeon 9800 PRO Sapphire Ultimate and the thing works like a charm. What I can advise you is that you remove the stock cooler and replace it with a better one.I have done that with my 9600 PRO and its working fine.My VGA Card with current CoolerSize of the stock coolerKinda looks like the one thats comes with the one at newegg.Cya buddy!

That'll be much better than the 9800Pro.
Scubar Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Although the 9800pro is a good card putting it in an AGP 4x Mobo is really going to degrade its performance. you could probably save about $50 and get a 9700pro and then buy yourself a new mobo with Agp 8x whilst your at it.

All the benchmarks I've seen the 6600GT paces out the 9800Pro by a good margin. The only way I see it catch up to the Nvidia if the benchmarks were all AA/AF tests.

Thai3g_Eclipse Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Linkageit shows no AA/AF and with AA/AFAh, the tried-and-true HL2 benchmark. Not a real fair test considering HL2 is optimized for ATI cards. Look at the other benchmarks, particularly the unbiased ones such as 3DMark05.
ODC Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 (edited) Well he is buying the card specifically for a half-life2 engined game, now isn't he. Edited September 21, 2005 by ODC

Thai3g_Eclipse Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Well okay then, the Radeon 9800 Pro it is. If overheating becomes such a concern, invest in the Artic Cooling's ATI Silencer HSF.
