Symantec has bought Sygate

Symantec acquires Sygate Technologies

Computer security software company Symantec Corp. said Tuesday it is acquiring Sygate Technologies Inc., of Fremont, another security company.

Symantec (NASDAQ:SYMC - News), of Cupertino, did not disclose financial terms of the acquisition of Sygate, which specializes in securing the "endpoints" of a computer network which may be vulnerable to threats such as unauthorized access.

"Securing the 'endpoints' of a corporate network is a challenge that affects all enterprises," said Chris Christiansen, vice president of security products and services, IDC, a tech research firm. "Companies are looking for integrated offerings that can both protect the network and ensure that endpoints are compliant with security policies."

Most all of the 200 employees at Sygate will join the 14,000-person work force of Symantec, a Symantec spokeswoman said. The acquisition should be completed as soon as all regulatory approvals are met.

so eh, maybe we should ringfence the last working version of their firewall for 98 (MDGx ?) before Symantec get their crappy hands on it.

I am inclined to agree with your suggestion..........

other than most of their product being enormous bloatware (most of which don't work without IE) and making your computer grind to near halt you mean ?

i don't know, i've had their anti-virus & firewall etc free with hardware and installed it only ONCE (it did work on 98SE though, although 'work' is being generous)

it's so crap, imo undoubtedly the worst product in common usage after IE. one things for sure Symantec will not be offering anything for 'free', i don't think they ever have.

I hated it when symantec buys products like partition magic from powerquest Sygate was one of the smallest and easy firewalls to install

Symantec bought Partition Magic!? Ahh crap, I never heard about that. Yeah, don't trust anything that comes out of symantec. I still remember the horrors of NAV 2002 and 2003. I got more viruses on XP Home with virus "protection" than I did without it! And if anyone's tried Norton Personal Firewall (also produced by symantec) it is the most annoying firewall (and most resource consuming one) I've ever seen.

Each new version is worse, just as with any other software from major corporations. It's certainly not unique to Symantec.

Anyway, the DOS version of Norton Disk Doctor is compact and useful, and much faster than scandisk.

Jlo555 I second that about NAV, I have tried a few versions all that have come free with hardware and they are the worst programs ever, it was quite goo at preventing viruses in my tests, but wow was it resource hungry! Very noticeable difference in performance after uninstalling it! And the cost of subscription to the update service after your first year is ridiculous. Now I use AVG and could highly reccommend it. Have used it for about a year on 7 systems and no noticible performance drop at all, plus regular updates, plus not had a virus cause any damage since using it. As for a firewall I stick to xp's pretty useless one...just coz it's there, combined with my router. That's enough protection for me.
