kocoman Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Is it possible to convert win98se "upgrade only" version to clean install version from dos? I think it will need some files added? Thanks
os2fan2 Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 been doing this all the time. What you need is a copy of win31 or whatever it is upgraded from, and when the complience check complains about not finding windows, simply point it at the install directory. It works much faster against a copy of w31 than w95.

os2fan2 Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 The batch program actually allows you to specify that.
kocoman Posted August 4, 2005 Author Posted August 4, 2005 I can't run setup from dos, it says "this is a windows program", even the readme on my cd says it cannot be installed from dos.. but thats what I want to do. Thanks
os2fan2 Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 I am not familiar with that version of upgrade. It must be some kind of Windows 95 only step-up thing (which requires Windows 95 to be installed first, and then upgrades it to windows 98).
dirtwarrior Posted August 5, 2005 Posted August 5, 2005 I have a windows millennium upgrade disc. I would like to fix it to where it would boot from the cd like a full version. Any ideas?
iWindoze Posted August 5, 2005 Posted August 5, 2005 The batch program actually allows you to specify that.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Where? I've used the program...I've yet to see this option!I admit to having used the version that came with my Win98SEdisk, is there a different version which I should have used? Please reply, I'd like to know how to do this! As it is now thebatch just times out into a 'Setup has examined the directoriesand failed to find...." that allows me to manually specifiy butdefeats the whole purpose of having an unattended install!--iWindoze

Any ideas?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>To do that you'd want to make a boot disk with a customized autoexec.batto start the setup.exe in dos mode...something like:D:\winme\setup.exethen (once you've verified that the boot disk finds your cdrom, the setupfiles in the proper directories, ect) you'll want to make a disk image withWinImage and choose it as the bootable disk when you reburn the filesin Nero or whatever burning program you use....I'm sure someone else can specifiy a better way to find the cd-rom drivethan this tho' perhaps you can figure it out a way from reading sophorific'scode in the unattended update cd-install thread..?-iWindozePS: This still doesn't address the bigger issue of how to specifiy where theolder OS files are so that setup will quit bugging us about them.
mr_bumbles Posted August 5, 2005 Posted August 5, 2005 kokoman,Are you asking if you can do a clean install of win98se in DOS with an upgrade cd?If so, Yes you can, w/o modification as long as you have a qualifying upgradeable OS.BuMbles

os2fan2 Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 If setup.exe does not run under DOS, then you can't do a clean install. Setup.exe will indeed run under DOS, even on upgrade versions. At some point, it asks that it has no complying version of Windows, and for you to point to an install of it.So, on my home-grown Win98 disk, i have a copy of Win311 for that purpose (as well as pulling some files out of it later on ). It runs really quickly then. You have what is known as a 'step-up' version, which upgrades an existing system, typically Win98, to WinME. You need to first install the qualifying product, and then install WinME. The qualifying product (eg Win98), is then used as the base of the install and much of the configuration comes therefrom.
