Hi, It should work that with the modem and the routers piwer supply unplugged you connect the modem to the wan port on the router and connect the PC to one of the other ports then plug in the modem and after thats up plug in the the router this should be all there is to it, If your running XP Sp2 I believe there is a firmware upgrade for that, if none of this works call their tech support at linksys 1-866-242-8558, if the tech support person sounds lost just hang up and call back you will get someone else. Make sure you have your cable/dsl modem in to correct RJ-45 on the back of the router first and formost. You should see activity on the router once the modem is plugged in and online. Then use a Cat5/5e/6 cable and run it to your NIC on your desktop to the back of the router. You should then either get a "network cable unplugged" error or be connected. If unplugged, go into network places and check our TCP/IP settings for the connection, make sure they are "Obtain IP address automatically" and same for DNS information. Also, log into the router by going to http://192.168.1.1 in your browser and setup DHCP, DNS, forwarding etc. Like Medicsix said, if using SP2 get the newest up to date firmware for the router and flash it.

i believe linksys is now providing a CD which will set up all of that for you. It's  called pushbutton setup or something of the like.

otherwise, http://kb.linksys.com is always a good option as well. they'll have specific instructions depending on your internet provider

Any included software from Linksys usually sucks...

My guide should help you out:
