barn Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 Hi,I have recently setup a wireless network in my home which consists of a wireless modem/router, 2 laptops, and a desktop. The desktop machine is running windows 2000. I have a second wired network on a hub which includes a couple desktops (including the one already described) and a printer. I want to be able to see the computers on the wired network on the laptops (on the wireless network). It is not possible to run a network cable from the hub to the router because there are too many walls in the way... so is there any way of setting of setting up 'the link' desktop to solve the problem? Thanks in advance
jcarle Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 (edited) You'd have to make your desktop machine act as a router/hub...A simpler solution could be to simply get a Wireless bridge and connect the bridge directly into your wired hub. Edited July 23, 2005 by jcarle
chilifrei64 Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 you will need 2 compatible wireless devices. One will replace your wireless router(unless it is compatible) and one to replace your hub.You will set bridge these 2 wireless devices together. I have done this myself with 2 Dell TrueMobile2300's so I know it works with those.. To my knowledge, NetGear, D-Link, and Linksys have the same capabilities. There may even be others also. Infact, I did this over a year ago.. if anyone knows of another device that will do this please post. I think i remember seeing something that would connect wired to wirelessWorse case scenario.. buy your self wireless cards for the desktops
Rayza Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 CNET has a base station that has an RJ45 socket built in which allows you to connect it to a switch. It comes with software which allows you to asign an IP address to the base station. All the wireless devices connect to the base station and are all visible on the network to the wired clients. No need to bridge.
jcarle Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 He already has a base station. That's what a wireless router does. That's why I suggested a Wireless bridge because it's cheaper then that.
