ooh ooh!

thanks Mchart... found the following...

need to run qchain.exe

@echo off
setlocal
set PATHTOFIXES=some path
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q123456_w2k_sp2_x86.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q123321_w2k_sp2_x86.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q123789_w2k_sp2_x86.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\qchain.exe

according to microsoft,

QChain.exe cleans the Pending File Rename Operations key in the registry to make sure that only the latest version of a file is installed after the computer is restarted.

this is the page too...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q296861

i'll see how this goes tomorrow... so what i'll have to do is do SP2 and then run this batch file once im done...

fun times!

QChain isn't needed for post-SP2 fixes. That functionality is built into the hotfix installers.

I've actually done a repair install with a CD with my update pack integrated over a normal XP install, and it actually worked OK.

My stuff shouldn't have any effect on Security Center. My bet is something else is causing that.

That's what I thought after reading the MS KB and TechNet articles, but the MSFN Guide says it's needed (in the SVCPACK.INF Method section). Perhaps it needs updating or clarification.

On a related note, are Type 2 hotfixes not released any more?
