Try Searching.

DON'T DOUBLE POST!

Try this:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. In Folder Options, click the File Types tab.
  4. In Registered file types, scroll down to AVI and select it.
  5. In the Details for 'AVI' section, click Change.
  6. In the Opens with dialog box, in the Programs area, select Windows Media Player, and then click OK.

I had this exact same problem after installing the Kazaa-Lite codec pack on my laptop, which associates video files with Media Player Classic. Every time Id double click a vid file it would bring up that open with box... even after checking 'always open with this file type' and even after checking the file types menu and ensuring thats what it was associated with.

I never did find a solution to this though.. which of course doesnt help you at all. Perhaps try reinstalling the codec pack? Or if the XP Codec pack also includes Media Player Classic (not familiar with that pack), locate the path where its installed and run 'mplayerc.exe /unregvid'.

Post up if your results!

This for Open and Play may help

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.avi]
@="AVIFile"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AVIFile\shell]
@="play"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AVIFile\shell\open]
@="&Open"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AVIFile\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\" /prefetch:8 /Open \"%L\""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AVIFile\shell\play]
@="&Play"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AVIFile\shell\play\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\" /prefetch:8 /Play \"%L\""
