LS_Dragons Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 Is there a way to split a drive partition (1 hard drive currently partitioned as 1 partition) into 2 partitions JUST USING XP TOOLS? I don't have partition magic or other tools at this system, so I just want to use the built in XP managemnt tools. Thanks - LS
FthrJACK Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 fdisk.. but not if its the drive your currently using. you will need the DOS floppies.you can get them from microsoft.comor you could do it with the XP cd and just stop it after the partitoning bit.
LS_Dragons Posted November 21, 2002 Author Posted November 21, 2002 Yeah - I know I can do that -- but I don't want to lose the XP install already there -- basically, I want to split the drive so I can set up a dual boot with Lindows. The drive is NTFS. If I have to get Partition Magic, I will - but was hoping I could do this without it.LS
zipp51 Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 You need Partition Magic 8 which supports ext 3 linux partitions,or install a second hard drive as I have done and use Mandrake 9's disdrake. It's a bit complicated with the second hd,but I have the instructions if you need them.Essentially you use the XP hard drive as master slave and the linux as primary master and of course use the linux boot loader(lilo) to chose OS's upon boot up.The XP partition shows up as NT.Personally I would purchase Partition Magic 8 if you have a large hard drive.
