(TOKYO, JAPAN) Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. (MKM) today announced the world's first dual layer DVD-R disc made to DL standards to be launched this spring.
With development of this new disc, capacity of DVD-R discs is now double*3 that of conventional discs of this type. When using these new discs in compatible DVD drives, not only large amounts of data can be recorded continuously on the discs, but also the discs can be used in conventional DVD players of PC DVD-ROM drives to playback the recordings.
Compared to conventional DVD-R capacities of 4.7 GB, MKM's new disc offers 8.5 GB capacity.

* Data must be recorded on this product with a single-sided dual-layer DVD-R compatible drive. Other drives cannot be used.

That's the only part that sucks.

I do like the idea that it is DVD-R though; usauly better compatibility... I have been using some DVD+R for data storage/back ups that are 8.5GB big and must be on a single disc - they work like a charm :) . Although they are still expensive even in bulk when compared to a stardard DVD that holds only 4GB. Not to mention it takes almost 40min to burn a single sided DL DVD on most common DVD burners. Where as it only takes about 12min avg to burn a 4GB per DVD disc. I would rather save the money and time - burn two DVD's at 4GB; 24min time. Later on when the prices go down - speed goes up - and "DL RW/+/-" is availble in one drive that has a good standard; then I will pick one up. LOL!

my opinion anyways...

What is the point for having a DVD-R DL media when there are no DVD-RW drives, that supports DVD-R DL. Better yet how about HD-DVD?
