Avoid paying $99 for Lindows "click n run"

nice article over at extreme tech i found,

Since Lindows is essentially Debian, we fired up the command prompt and typed "Apt-get install Gimp." Voila! Lindows connected to the Debian FTP server and downloaded and installed the Gimp. So we easily got get around paying Lindows for Click-N-Run.

After installing Gimp, we used apt to get GAIM on my machine. And then, wildly out of control at the command prompt at that point, we installed Galeon too. Apt worked beautifully, it grabbed Galeon and the necessary libraries and a few minutes later Galeon was running on our Lindows desktop.

Want to make apt even easier? Try this at the command line in Lindows: apt-get install synaptic. Start Synaptic after the install finishes and you have a nice GUI installer for apt. That's going to make it nearly as easy as using Click-N-Run without having to pay the yearly fee (though it's not nearly as slick as Click-N-Run).

Bear in mind that apt and Click-N-Run both work best on a broadband connection. Some software packages can be quite large. You can still download them over a dialup connection but it might take significantly longer, depending on the package.

also before using apt-get, try this

Open console then run "apt-get update"

now try use "apt-get install synaptic" to install a GUI for apt.

apt-get is a simple command line interface for downloading and

installing packages. The most frequently used commands are update

and install.

Commands:

  update - Retrieve new lists of packages

  upgrade - Perform an upgrade

  install - Install new packages (pkg is libc6 not libc6.deb)

  remove - Remove packages

  source - Download source archives

  build-dep - Configure build-dependencies for source packages

  dist-upgrade - Distribution upgrade, see apt-get(8)

  dselect-upgrade - Follow dselect selections

  clean - Erase downloaded archive files

  autoclean - Erase old downloaded archive files

  check - Verify that there are no broken dependencies

Options:

 -h  This help text.

 -q  Loggable output - no progress indicator

 -qq No output except for errors

 -d  Download only - do NOT install or unpack archives

 -s  No-act. Perform ordering simulation

 -y  Assume Yes to all queries and do not prompt

 -f  Attempt to continue if the integrity check fails

 -m  Attempt to continue if archives are unlocatable

 -u  Show a list of upgraded packages as well

 -b  Build the source package after fetching it

 -c=? Read this configuration file

 -o=? Set an arbitary configuration option, eg -o dir::cache=/tmp

Edit:

Now you will get security updates and packages from true Debian servers ever time you do:

apt-get update

apt-get upgrade

I would not suggest doing apt-get dist-upgrade though

btw.. you wouldnt know which config i edit so that natsemi.o gets used for my nic each time i start? i have to manually do it.

come on dont be scared, you only need a 2gb partition and the debian or lindows CD. i hated hunting for rpms and having to compile code etc in other distros. i wish i had tried debian before, im in love

np, I've been using Debian since v2.2, currently using it for my server.

To get the driver to load each time, edit /etc/modules and put in the name of the module without the .o extension on a new line, and it should work

i put the .o extension on, but it still works. and dchp is sorted out automatically as it should be too, no need to do release / refresh now.

ummmm..be4 you post not sooo bright comments, u might wanna read the thread or the links pertaining to what your making you comments about..that way when you make the comment it wont just be a blind judgment on a particular product like Lindows.....Lindows really isnt half window and half linix..its just a distro of linix, that along with some applications line WINE can run windows based applications....

Drews correct, its just a linux distro with some things renamed, such as My computer, My ducoments etc.. to make a windows user more familiar with it from the start.

Funny tho.. i hardly ever use "my computer" or "my documents" on linux....

Some Linux users rename stuff like that anyway, and ive seen plenty of screenshots where people are using WindowsXP style icons, FOOOD has good icons sets, as he does them in PNG flavour too its good for linux (cant use ico)

its a common mistake to think its half and half, just because the name is.

it DID used to look pretty similar to win98 tho.. remember back then? it even had a START button.
