Use Web Space To Create An Additional Hard Drive?

Recommended Posts

First off, I already posted this in the WinXP section.. then noticed this section and figured this to be more prevelant to it instead... sorry for the double post and admins- feel free to move/delete the other one...

Either one of these 2 things Im looking to do here...

1. Ive got a web host provider with a ton of space and bandwith Im not using. Is there any way possible that I can configure windows to connect to and use that space as an additional hard drive that I can access via explorer?

2. Could I setup my home PC with an 'online folder' that I could connect to and treat as an addtional drive (such as a network drive) on say my work pc. I know WinXP has that 'Web Folders' functionality, but Im not real familiar with it enough to know if this is the solution to what Im looking for.

Basically the main thing Im looking for here is a place to centrally house my frequently accessed files (docs, mp3s, vids perhaps) and have the ability to access them directly from remote locations (mainly my work pc).

Are either of these possible? Any ideas or suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

::EDIT:: I figured out how to accomplish the 2nd thing I wanted to do here, by simply configuring IIS and creating a webshare to the folders I want to access on my home PC.

So just need to figure out how to do the 1st thing I was looking for... use web space as an online virtual drive.... is it possible??

there are a few things you could do.... I do not know of any free ways to do this using explorer, although there are some software solutions you can pay for and use there webspace.

You could use the web publshing wizard or my option is to have an area on my site that I can use PHP scripts to upload and organise my files, FTP software can be used for greater control also. The good thing about this is you can get your files up and downloaded with any web browser on any platform. But you cannot save directly to it from word for example.

Let me know if you find anything
