The adapter instructs can seem confusing-- they were originally given out for win9x Network Properties(the tcpip is bound to several items in that dialog box, so one has to pick the correct item)-- never mind for you, you must be on XP.

& I spaced out on the previous answer(i was right about being dumb): You're making up an ip address not assigned to anything else(dummy address)-- so use that 2(or any other digit besides 1) at the end.

I just looked at my settings: i have 192.168.1.10 but say, 192.168.1.2 would also work, if it wasn't assigned to something else shared / in the network.

Hopefully that works-- it fixed quite a bit for me.

dsl speed is dependent on many factors when i was living in chicago.

we had dsl at the office and it was slow

due to the distance the CO or central office

at the house which was closer to the CO it was blazzing fast.

you can go to dslreports and check out their guides.

dsl reports?? i go to that site and i get lost haha!!

yup im on xp pro sp1. guess the adapter thingy aint there

so ur saying i should make up an ip address?

ok i have the "obtain ip automatically". now i should instead choose "use the following ip address". wut about the dns server options on the bottom? should i leave that blank? and wut about the "advanced" option there?

wow i never knew dsl would be so complicated!!! but hey, i love the speeds!! :D

In that way XP can make it a bit easier than 9x.

DSLReports can be very useful at the particular forum of one's ISP-- one may see official traffic & trouble reports... their techs on their own time may supply better 'unofficial' advice w/o having to stick to mandatory work scripts....from the tweakers the word'll be out on the best particular tricks & settings to have enabled...

I'm waiting for the 25/50mb versions to come my way-- Norway for one, has had something like that in fairly widespread use for years now.

Yes, select 'assign an ip address'. And I wouldn't touch any of those other settings-- your connection may stop working: you're not hosting, running servers / far-flung networks w/ multiple static ip's, etc...

The Treewalk dns utility, if installed, would help in that it removes the dns lookup from your isp to your memory cache-- the speed difference is small/negligible but it's there. Even better, it has extra resolving options: websites servers can change domain name, ip address, server, host & that info may not be updated in timely fashion at any/all relay points on the web-- relay servers on the web may suffer overload or some problem necessitating an alternate route.. you'd just get an indefinite stall or page/site not found/not available error message. I have confirmed this efficacy-- some sites that can't be resolved w/o installing/enabling treewalk magically appear with it, disappear back w/o it. BTW one trick: removing/adding the www prefix sometimes allows access.

You can always compare notes with isp's manual if having problems, but folks usually are ecstatic if they can get 90% of their stated dsl level. I'd continue to let them monitor your line the first 2/3 weeks-- there's software settings they adjust to compensate for any physical line issues... after this initial period you may then squeeze out a smidgen more performance, and that's about it.

ok i added the address "192.168.0.2" and when i checked my properties, it had "manually configured", instead of "assigned by dhcp" but i couldnt surf. whenever i typed in a website, it would never go there :(

wut happend

Nix that then.... when i can get access to winxp / dsl computer i will hunt around-- but even then, my isp may do things differently from yours-- there's a lot of changing & upgrading nowadays....

It may not even be an issue-- if you'd kindly post your ISP & approximate region or state, i'll get the straight scoop.. or someone else here may pipe up....

That's all you changed / if you reverse that you can re-connect to web, no?

i got sbc yahoo dsl and im in south california. and my home address is....ahha yea rite!!

yup i just change back to "obtain ip automatically" and i can surf the web again

I have a friend that has Adelphia broadband. Sometimes things vary within a city: take NYC-- Roadrunner cable in a particularly dense Manhattan location is slower than the cheaper Verizon Dsl(& Earthlink, using their lines is even cheaper), so a no-brainer there-- while in a sparse area of Queens the cable is much faster than the dsl, so i pay for that extra....

Okie Dokie: At SBC/Yahoo! forum I see the following settings used in communications between techs & customers-- using Dr.Tcp :

In drop-down menu, MTU 1492 for both the Ethernet Adapter(NIC) & Router(if/when you get one-- very important to not allow the router to auto handle this setting, or you may start seeing things like you can access a site, but not all areas of it, etc. )

Tcp Receive Window 63888

Windows Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection: set all to Default.

Max Duplicate Acks and TTL: Leave Blank

Save/Exit & Restart Networking or Reboot.

drtcp.gif

As far as the DHCP tweak, i looked up SBC self-install instructs & noticed they use Enternet client to connect: it handles ip addressing different-- uses a couple of different methods before resorting to dhcp.... so if you signed up w/ them using their software, that would explain why that change is not advisable.

If you registered with them w/o their software(you can just use winxp alone & not install any of their software at all=less drag & bloat), these would be the steps-- which you likely already performed correctly:

Control Panel / Network & Internet Connections / Network Connections / right-click icon: Ethernet card connected to DSL modem / Properties / Internet Protocol TCP-IP / Properties / General / Use the following IP address: 192.168.xxx.xxx (x=whatever you want) / Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 / Ok / Restart Networking or Reboot.

As far as ppp clients-- if you're a maximus tweaker, you might be attracted to raspppoe-- drawbacks would be:

in case of trouble(none now, but in the future you may add another computer / router to the connection)... i haven't looked up their specific TOS, but you'd likely forfeit SBC/Yahoo! customer support w/o their or winxp's client(though you'd still get unofficial help from their techs at the forum), and as well MS(& in some ways windows xp can make it so easy to connect);

though you'd still have rasspppoe site, dslreports & other such sites, & Bob Carrick, an advocate of it for quite some time, he's a good guy: worked at Verizon for years & then branched off on his own. In fact, here are his instructs for installing it:Contains screenshot links also, & as well as other tips for auto-connect, ppp & winxp troubleshooting help, etc.

thanks horsecharles!!! unfortunately i have skoo in 30 min so i gotta get ready. ill do wut u suggested later on the day

i thought the max mtu was 1492?

verizon and roadrunner isnt available here, but theyre available in the city next to where i live!! LOL. earthlink dial is available, not earthlink broadband.

well i did install with their software but that slowed my computer down like crazy. then i found out the installation cd wasnt even necessary so i uninstalled everything the cd installed and my dsl still works fine!

wow now i know 3 tweaking tools!! dr. tcp, cablenut and tcp optimizer!!!

yes, on 1492-- don't follow the gif, but the printed numbers:

MTU 1492 for both the Ethernet Adapter(NIC) & Router(if/when you get one-- very important to not allow the router to auto handle this setting, or you may start seeing things like you can access a site, but not all areas of it, etc. )

Tcp Receive Window 63888

Windows Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection: set all to Default.

Max Duplicate Acks and TTL: Leave Blank

Do as i say, not as i do(actually i pilfered that image from dslreports site) :D

ok i did all of that and in the end...i still couldnt surf the net!!! i give up!! i forgot why im even made this thread!! oh yea, to increase dsl speed lol. thanks tho horsecharles.
