More than one question here.

1] I believe my original Win XP CD is shot. I want to do a low level reformat of my HD. Does anyone know where I can get an exceptionally good price on a Win XP CD?? Not pirated stuff, but the complete OS with reg. key, etc.?

2] Is there much difference, other than price, between Win XP home version vs.

Win XP Professional?

Thanks much.

yeah, there are differences

Pro can log onto an NT network

it can encrypt files

there are a couple of other things, but those 2 are the main differences

BTW, if your original disk is ruined, it is legal to use a copy as long as you have the original license

"Pro can log onto an NT network"... What? You can always logon to a NT network, even with ´98. :hello:

But Pro has GPEDIT.MSC to edit user setting and restrictions. Pro has some enabled network function that you have to set by hand in a Home version.

Other then that, there is NO difference, only in price. But if you have a licence, you can order a new CD from Microsoft, why buy a more expensive licence?

PS. Low Level Format, you don´t want to do that, you just want to Format your harddisk. Low Format is more like a factory format that will take hours on a small HDD of 4GB and could take a day for a 120GB. Just format it. (Only you use it to get writ of bad sectors... if that´s what you want... some times it works.)

Windows XP Home CAN NOT log into an NT network (without some kind of 3rd party addon)

Windows XP Pro allows you access to MMC consoles, which are administrative tools. Pro also allows 10 simotanious connections where as XP Home only 5. XP Pro also offers extended security between users on the same PC. Also, offers multi-processor support, where as Home does not. There are also a LOT of utilities that are not found in Windows XP Home.

OK, OK, technicality here

I was speaking of domains, as most offices have the NT networks set up on domains.

But as far as an end user, if all you want to do is surf, email, play games, burn CDs etc. the home version is fine.

I haven't found it to be any less stable than pro even tho I've heard rumors of it

I think that's all PEBKAC

Okay, then next time be more clear :P... Any way, we agree on that DOMAIN thingy, and the Pro version isn´t worth the cash for a "home user".

Edit: PS, with some reg settings you can logon to domains, don´t remember how, only that you have to enable some stuff. technicaly Pro is the same as the Home version.

and to add to that, some software will not install under home edition that will install under pro like the windows installer v3 to name one of em,also with pro you have more control of the os than in home edition, and most ppl will buy home because it is way cheaper than pro

Well this is only if your in college. but if you rin college you usually get discounts for student stuff. Very useful hahaha. But others youll have to buy the whole thing. Or updated version which is cheaper.
