Hi, Im rebuilding a Packard Bell for my cousin. It was using win98se and was corrupted and was infected by a few trojans.

I thought i'd help and rebuild their pc. So i pulled out their HDD and put it in my machine and formatted it. then i unplugged my HDD and loaded XPpro sp2 onto their HDD, ran all the updates etc etc.

Everything is working fine when in my machine but wheni place the HDD back into their machine it wont boot completely. And gives me a boot error, and asking me if i want to boot in safe mode etc etc. But even in safe mode it still wont boot XP and just repeats the DOS error message above.

What can i do???

put the HD in the packard bell and install XP there

I have heard a few success stories of people doing it this way using a PC with fairly generic drivers and also removing other drivers after the install, prior to swapping back into the original machine. When in the new machine it will start asking for the driver disks required in order to boot into the OS.

In my opinion, it's not worth the hassle, you've got the original PC so put the drive back in its own machine and do it properly from scratch

I would question weather or not the Packard Bell has enough horsepower to run XP.

Should work, just install it on that computer.

The system requirements for that OS include 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

Therefore if you insist on using it, you may need to take measures to remove as much unnecessary stuff as possible, bearing in mind that your onboard graphics will likely be using some of your existing 128 MB.

I am using my slipstreamed XPpro sp2 disc that has all the excess bulk stripped away. ( this unattended install disc has worked on all my previous installs, and some on very similar rigs too)

Here an update.

I formated the HDD in my PC, then put it back into the Packard Bell.

XPpro started to install then the monitor went blank although i would see HDD activity.

I left it for 20minutes and the screen didnt come back on at all.

I soft powered off, and powered back on again.

This time the install started again then cycled upto 100% then gave me an error saying it cannot find the HDD in the system.

Its getting very weird!

You should put the drive in the computer you are going to be installing XP on. Then partition, format and install on that computer.

What I am guessing is happening is that the BIOS recognizes the hard drive a bit differently in your computer then the Packard Bell. So when you put the drive in the PB the formatting is a bit off.
