Mchart
Well yesterday I booted up my computer, decided to surf the web, so.. I used mozilla like normal. I came across a site that wasnt working in mozilla so i fired up IE, and to my suprise, IE gave me a "Invalid Syntax Error" message to almost any website I went to. I have not installed anything new in the past days, and this problem just started yesterday. I do not have any virus's, im pretty secure on that stuff, nor do I have any spyware. The weird thing is IE can display some sites, but then not others. And the worst thing is that the windows update site does not work. It gives me the same error. So the first thing I tried was clearing all my temp files and whatnot, same problem. Then I checked to see if IE decided I was running through a proxy server, no, my connection settings were correct. Next I reverted all IE settings back to default, nope same error. Now at this point I knew that something was really wrong, so I fired up SB S&D to check for spyware and whatnot, but no, nothing. Plus I know for a fact that I have none on my computer right now after spending hours digging through the registry..So next I try iexplore.exe /rereg that to fix any broken dll's. Nope, problem still there.Next I try sfc /scannow nope, still nothing.Nextup is to rebuild my tcp/ip stack just because. netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt Nope still borked. The next step I did was spend hours digging through the registry looking for anything strange, and reseting some settings by hand, but no, its still broken.Ok so now im like WTF, the final thing I try is re-installing the microsoft code thats for style sheets and whatnot, since it seems to be sites that have CSS arent working. But no, that doesnt work. So, my only option left now is to re-install IE using rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf that command. So I try that, but of course it tells me that I need the SP2 install disc to complete the operation.. Which of course I dont have, so here I sit typing. So first off, any ideas on what the problem is? And second off, how would I be able to make my own SP2 install disc just like the microsoft one. I do not have 4-6 weeks to wait for the free microsoft SP2 install disc. Thanks
Vel Straty
Same thing happened to me many times and never came up with a solution to fix the problem. It just gives up an error for each link stuff. The only way that I did was to reinstall the whole system. I used an Unattended CD so it was just one click away to a clean system. If you want the SP2, just download it from microsoft. Just search inside microsoft and it should be there in a second. Mchart
Well I would think "Reinstall windows" but the thing is, its only doing this to some sites. For instance; http://www.xpcgear.com/ Works Fine http://dsl.sbc.yahoo.com/ My homepage, does not work at all. http://maddox.xmission.com/ Works Fine http://www.tweakxp.com/ Does not work at allThe windows update site gives me the syntax error as well.Thank Mr. Horse for Mozilla.. Mchart
I messed up on the links, and When I went to edit them, they for some reason dont work.Ok try the links now, they are fixed. They should work fine in IE or mozilla for you though, since your IE isnt borked. Mchart
Also after some thought it seems like links which I type in the address bar, which are then referred to another link, give the syntax error. So for instance if I type in www.blahbing.com and it had the code to refer me to www.google.com, IE would give me that syntax error page.
mark
Could the address bar be retaining some of the previous address in some way, causing the error?
Mchart
No. I think the problem has to do with a core file of IE. So if anyone can tell me how to make a SP2 install CD just like the one microsoft sends out, or actually knows what the problem is, well yeah..The only way I can "re-install" the SP2 version of Internet Explorer is by using that command I mentioned, but when I do so, it asks for the SP2 install CD. I could re-install SP2, but doing that could cause more problems.

Mchart
That is for the slipstreamed versions though. I need the non-slipstreamed SP2 disc. (Which I ordered from microsoft, but that takes 4 weeks), Or somehow figure out how to burn it myself.
