recently my computer is running slow as hell,, i just built it, its a p4 3.0 ghz 8000fsb with 1gb of ddr ram behind it, with a 128 radeon 9200 8x agp video card, usualy i cann uzip a . rar or .tar file under 5 minutes maybe less, but know its taking me almost a half hour for the same thing, same a s transferring files from one internal drive to another...

i have run ad aware many times, removed any unwanted things, i have norton 03 installed and updated as off september 11th, and that isn't picking up anything, and even that is running slow, it literally stops at a certain point. also i cant keep my homwe page, i think like an unknown trojan is there or something, and everytime i reset it to hotmail, it comes back and gives me another webopage upon opening.

does anyone know of any viruses i dont know about, is there anything else i should do, every program i have installed i need.....im just fed up because i can do things as quick as i use to.....i even defragged a couple of times, and that didn't even work...

holla back plz

Yes, you could open task manager and watch which processes eat your CPU time.

Then, you can see if anything is out of normal, check this site to set properly your services:

If you can't say what is wrong, post here a list of your processes say after 2 hrs the PC is running.

To get it, use an utility like this one:

Hi,

One of my customers had the same problem, almost sounds identical. I took out Norton antivirus and Norton firewall. Put in Kerio firewall and NOD32 antivirus and Problem solved. For some reason, Norton's in time plugs everything up or slows it down and when removed, seems many problems go away. Why it happens on some computers and not others is anyones guess that I have no answer for. You can try to uninstall Norton's and see if there is any difference.

I can't speak for 2005, but NAV 2004 was a definite resource hog. However, he said he's running 2003 which I've never known to cause that problem.

However, I did just notice that he already mentioned Ad-Aware in his first post, I just looked right over the top of it, heh. Ah, well. Better to be overly cautious and help too much than to assume too much and not help enough.

One Question I have is did you ever find any spyware programs with spybot or adaware? I like these tools alot, although those two detect/clean almost all spyware they're not 100% I just ran into a problem were they would not remove a malware program install by a supposed legit program.

other suggestions for spyware:

CWshredder to remove about 35 Cool Web veriants.

Highjackthis {already mentioned} to check your registry for changes to you registry [be careful not all changes listed are bad]

the program I ran into was called WtoolsA or Searchtoolbar I searched the web for these and found that it had to be manually removed even after adaware and spybot found and cleaned most of it out. the program would come back after a few hours and have to be cleaned again.

**Since your Running windows XP just start the machine in Diagnostic mode (MSCONFIG) and see how it functions if it works ok then you have program running that may need some fine tooning or be removed.**

Good Luck

Ah, yes. Forgot about WTools. That things bad enough it's almost a virus. You have to dig around pretty hard to get that one out.

Some programs like HJT can give you an informative log report but are helpless in actually fixing your machine.

You will need to kill rouge services, scour your Registry, delete suspect DLLs, EXEs, and DAT files in your C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folders from within the confines of Safe Mode.

These hijack exploits are new and getting better at buggering your machine six ways to Sunday.

Look for DLLs and EXEs with the same file size (different dates) and not signed by any well know software developer... MS signs all it's files...
